Planning ahead for Rare Candy investment

As a free-to-play trainer, Rare Candy takes a long time to earn.

Spare Rare Candy: 457
Have already taken one to level 30: Articuno (91%), Raikou (87%), Entei (91%), Lugia (89%), Groudon (93%), Kyogre (89%)
Parked enough to power one up to level 30: Moltres, Zapdos, Ho-Oh, Rayquaza*
Yet to use Rare Candy on: Mew, Suicune, Latios, Latias, Regice, Regirock, Registeel

Planning ahead for the Gen 4 legendaries, which would be worth saving Rare Candy for? Only Dialga and Palkia (unless moves for Heatran are changed)?

If so, where should I park Rare Candy (or actually use it for powering up) to free bag space?
1. I caught a perfect Mewtwo, but it will never be able to learn Shadow Ball. Need 187 Rare Candy to max it out.
2. During Rayquaza month, real life only let me catch a 84% with AS/AA and a 82% with AS/OR. However, it is likely to return, while Dialga, Palkia and Honchkrow did not get their best moves.
3. Chansey is also worth consideration because...welcome to Singapore.
4. Raikou is the top generalist gym attacker, but I only returned from hiatus in late October 2017, so my best from then was 87% and my best from research was 89%. Hard to tell when it will return (Zekrom will outclass it) and whether I will manage to get a 96+% one.
5. Equally hard to tell when (or even whether) Groudon will get Precipice Blades (and if so, how good it would be).

Which Moltres?

Also, when it does show up, I wouldn't spend any on Ho-oh either.

Do spend on Kyogre. (You didn't mention whether or not you had those )

I did power up a 89% Kyogre to level 30. Edited my post.

My best Moltres is 89% with FS/SA. Already parked the Rare Candy, so very likely to power it up to level 30 since Heatran turned out to be such a disappointment.

Rare candies should be given to Kyogre, Rayquaza, Groudon, Mewtwo and Raikou currently IMO. Definitely worth saving some for Palikia, Dialga and Heatran. All worthy. Most other legends will be surpassed by others in future generations. I wouldn't give rares to any non legends who can either be caught in the wild or via raids. IMO rares should only be used for candies you cannot really obtain. I wouldn't waste rares on Articuno (will be surpassed by Mamoswine, easily obtained candies), or Moltres (surpassed by Heatran in Gen 4, also Blast Burn Charizard!) and definitely none of the Regis, or Lati twins (Salamence and Dragonite are better and candies can be obtained). I know people who have used rares on TTar but not sure why because larvitar is in the wild and TTar raids are pretty common.

Some half-truths here about the fire types. With Heatran's current moves it's the bulkiest fire type but lags behind legendary and non-legendary options in terms of DPS. In addition Blast Burn Charizard is strictly worse than Overheat Moltres both in terms of DPS and TDO, however it is the best non-legendary option.

True, but why waste rare candies when a non legendary option is pretty close in DPS? BB Char puts up 34.7 DPS vs. Moltres at 35.7, you are talking 2% difference...I would tend to use rares on things that are head and shoulders above other options and also candies are not readily obtainable. Moltres with Sky Attack is actually quite a better option than Overheat as well if you are talking DPS. I'd keep him there since there are many other fire type options to use.

Sky Attack and Overheat have overlap in type matchups but they also have unique matchups that warrant considering both. You wouldn't send a SA Moltres against Regice or Registeel for example.

Of course not. I was just stating that there are free candy options for fire types that are close enough to avoid using rares on Moltres or Entei. You could have 6 BB Chars powered up and do very well with those.

True. It's worth mentioning though since OP is specifically looking for rare candy dumps.

I already parked Rare Candy in Moltres, so I will go ahead and power mine up to level 30 since Heatran is such a disappointment.

I hear DB/DC Latios makes a fun, fast gym sweeper if you're into that sort of thing. I've never used one personally so can't attest to its use.

Of the upcoming legendaries Dialga and Palkia will both have their uses thanks to their unique resistances among strong dragon types. Heatran's bulky but has worse DPS than available fire types. ZH/AV Regigigas has surprisingly high DPS against Rayquaza but it doesn't compare to the Gen 4 cross evos. Darkrai is promising. Shaymin-S will be good but FP Sceptile will out-DPS it.

I use my Latios powered up to 35 all the time and because of its quick hitting it makes for an enjoyable gym sweeping experience.

I have a DB/DC Latios at level 35, and it's great for demotivated gyms, but for fully motivated gyms that include Blissey and/or Slaking and/or Chansey, it's very slow. DC is not a very powerful charge move, and if it takes more than two DC's to defeat a defender, it's better to use something else, like DT/O Rayquaza or Dragonite, or FB Mewtwo.

What I'm getting here is I should take a Latios to L35 and see how I like it. I have a weather boosted 93% one I've been on the fence about for ages since its moves lack the raw power my other maxed dragons have.

Latios gets a little buff when the do the CP adjustment. And Blissey gets nerfed. They put it into effect for about 30 minutes maybe 2 weeks ago, before removing and I saw that. Alazazam and Gengar also get buffed by getting more bulk. Rayquaza also gets buffed (I think because he gets more bulk).

Knowing that about Latios has put it next on my list to power up. If memory serves me correctly, it will surpass Dragonite and Salamence - not by a lot, but still.

You're missing Darkrai. You'll likely only be able to catch one, and will want to max it out.

It could be an EX boss like Deoxys. Darkrai is mythical but it isn't one of the uniform BST mythical like Mew or Celebi.

I'd only spend RC on Rayquaza, Shadow ball mewtwo or Possibly Sky attack moltres.

Groudon's got terrible moves and even VS dialga it required sunny weather just to keep EVEN with machamp because of how terrible ground is. It might be good agaisnt heatran, but thats one match up and pokemon like Rhyperior can do almost the same thing without rarecandy. I wouldn't spend any RC on the mewtwo, without SB its not good for general use, and psychic's an irrelevant attacking type ATM and its other moves having no legendary match ups where its near top attackers, and possible Psystrike in the future. MEteor mash metagross took away Raikou's generalist usage (aside from the rarely seen water defenders these days) ontop of being bulker, not requiring rarecandies and theres gen 4 electric type nonlegendaries that can be competitive with it for DPS, and so on for most other legendaries, theres really not many good legendaries to invest rarecandy in aside from Mewtwo with shadow ball (all its other sets are inferior to other pokemon including nonlegendaries aside from Psychic with is again limited) Rayquaza Possibly sky attack moltres for machamp raids and possibly Kyogre, but i'd wait to see what the raids go to after this event ends before investing in kyogre (plus possible origin pulse in the future)

The gen 4 legendaries i'd save them for are Dialga, palkia and Darkrai, with Darkrai out DPS'sing Even shadow ball mewtwo

At this moment, i would just hoard all those RC.
Nothing much worth investing them in besides Mewtwo, Rayquaza, Raikou, Kyogre, Groudon. With the possibility of Rayquaza and Groudon returning (hopefully with exclusive moves), it might be worth holding off till then. If you really want to use them, then SB mewtwo would be the next choice.
