I just want to know what I am not understanding here. So I traded with my mom the other day to get a Mr. Mime since she went to Italy last month and figured I would get a lot of progress towards the pilot medal, since I traded a spare Zapdos I caught at home here in California. However, it still says I have 0km total right now. Is this a known bug or is there something else to it I don't know about.

Was this a Zapdos caught from a research breakthrough last month? Mons caught via research encounters up until very recently didn't display a catch location. Thus, resulting in 0kms when traded since the game can't determine the distance between Italy and the undefined location.

That's probably why it didn't count, yes it was from a research breakthrough. I forgot that Pokemon caught through research did not have a caught location.

The old ones don't. Any new ones do have location (and you can't open the encounters without a gps signal anymore).

The game shows you the distance on the trade screen, always check that it's showing what you think you should be getting. Like BlameScott said, older research mons don't have catch locations and give 0km no matter what they're traded with.

Regardless of Zapdos, you both still should have received the km for Mime.

It seems like the person RECEIVING the Pokémon gets the Kilometers, not the person TRADING it.

My wife and I tested it a few nights ago when a Pidgey showed up in our living room, so would have a 0km rating. I traded her a Pokémon I caught 300km away from home, she traded me that Pidgey - she got 300km for her badge, I got 0km. Then she traded me a Pokémon she had caught 20km outside of town, and I traded her the same Pidgey we had both caught - she got 0km, I got 20km.

So instead of both of us having 320km, I've got 20km and my wife has 300km. Which is annoying, but this is a badge I don't care about at all (at least until it starts to have a mechanical benefit in some way) so I'm more amused at it, and getting popcorn ready for players who are going to be insanely annoyed by this.

I've not had that problem. I've traded 4 mon with a 5000KM+ difference (obtained through pre-existing friends), and netted 22000 KM, with the total of the other trainers the same. Perhaps this is an odd one off?

Could be a glitch or a bug. It was happening to others who were trading at a Raid about 20min before I tried it with my wife. There were lots of other issues as well; the Raid Bonuses at "Great Friend" were showing up for some people at "Good Friend", but it seemed to be Team-Dependant and only showed up AFTER they Traded Pokémon (ie: the two Mystics I raid with on an almost daily basis were both "Good Friends", but after they traded a Pokémon, they had the Bonuses listed); when I tried with them, nothing happened (I'm Instinct - INSTINCT REPRES-hey a Pidgey, woohoo!).

Would be nice if it was a glitch; I'm getting a ton of Alolan Meowths from Overseas, so I'd love to trade them to people to get that Medal into the Gold so it's not constantly showing up as being "In Progress".

Wait are you sure you traded the same pidgey twice? I was under the impression that you could only trade a particular mon once to keep people from laundering mons and/or candy exploits.

They each caught the "same pidgey". So there were two pidgey, one each.

Originally caught or hatched (from the place where the eggs's taken), the 'mon will show the location on the bottom-most of the screen. Or you can check when you trade, it always show the distance.

For me, both traders got miles, it works every time so far. If the distance over 100 km, I will earn 3 candies instead of one.
