Maximise free raid passes

I haven't inverted a single dollar into the game. However, i am really thrilled with the current raid bosses. I already caught a 98% kyogre and I was thinking about how i could maximize my chances of stacking up either groudon or kyogre candy with only one pass a day.
I figured that groudon is much easier to catch as it doesn't drift side to side and is massive. Is it a rational decition to only hunt groudon and then if i decide I want to max out kyogre use rare candy?

Groudon is much easier to catch - I find Kyogre near impossible!
Groudon is at the top it's type, with Rhyperion trailing a fair way behind, but Ground is probably less useful than Water. Kyogre is a beast, but Gyarados and CD Feraligator are still fairly strong...

If I was raid limited I'd probably go Groudon but not an easy decision.

Ground is more useful that water. It hits 5 common types for SE damage. Water on the other hand is only good against 3 types. 2 of which ground is also good against. The only reason Ground isn't as popular as it should be is because every good ground type is given Earthquake as a charge move. And Earthquake is just terrible.

Other ground moves aren't much better. Drill Run is the best but it doesn't look great compared to most of the best moves of other types.

Your thinking is good. I'd definitely rather try to catch Groudons and then spend RC on Kyogre. Groudon's shiny is more valuable as well since Kyogre already had one shiny run so it's more common.

Do note that Kyogre does not need to be maxed to outclass other water types. If you're going for maximum efficiency, a level 30 Kyogre is better than a level 40 Gyarados. Not sure how the comparison is to HC Feraligatr.

Groudon is definitely the easier catch. It sits much closer to the screen for easy excellents and literally doesn't move unless it's to deflect your ball - no jumping, no side to side.

Also shiny Groudon > shiny Kyogre.
