Level 40's - Did you go a little crazy as you appoached 4 million?

It seems the last 1/4 is the longest.... I should reach 40 in about a month and all I can think is XP! Love the current boxes, I need lucky eggs.... and catches, hatches and raids! No double XP event on the horizon, so I gotta make my own (evolutions!)

I never thought I'd care about reaching 40, but when I hit 39 in mid-December I realized I cared very much. 40 still means something, less than 2 years since the game started (I didn't start until Oct. 30, 2016 though).

It'll be nice to relax a bit.... no more pursuit of XP, no more lucky eggs.... but I wonder will it still be as much fun? (My 40 friend assures me yes, you just set different goals).

So how did you feel as you got close, and finally hit 40? Please share, and congrats!

I picked up speed after hitting level 40! Infact im already well into 30 million exp. Thats 10 million xp since the begining of november with almost no lucky eggs and a few evolutions durring one event.

I dont raid very much. My new objective is gold gyms. There is a very active playerbase in my area but not so crazy that gyms cant last all day - or in some cases much longer.

You know im always on the hunt for shinies.

The last side project im enjoying is powering up perfect or near perfect IV candidates of some of my favorite or more obscure mons.

To summarize 40 hasnt killed this game for me or fore the vast majority of my fellow trainers

First off, congrats on getting through the vast majority of the grind to 40! Reaching that final level is definitely a big accomplishment!

Hitting 40, for me, was a huge sigh of relief. The grind is real, and it's nice to have it over and done with. To me, it also opened up avenues for pursuing other goals, since I was no longer concerned about how much XP I was earning. Since hitting 40, my long term goals were to hit 100 gold gyms and max out specific Mons to lvl 40, and thus obtaining a unique top 12. Both have taken quite some time (and I'm finished with neither, as I'm currently sitting at 87/100 gold gyms, and the unique top 12 won't be possible for me until Latios gets released as it's the only Mon that can surpass my second Dragonite at 3484 CP, not including the other 11 candidates I already have).

So, nope, the game definitely doesn't end at 40 and in some ways can be even more enjoyable. Just gotta give yourself enough goals to chase after!

I slowed down after hitting level 40 (well, I say so, it doesn't exactly help that Dratini event came 10 days after I hit 40 and chewing through 260k of my stardust for maxing a draco meteor so in that sense I did play more lol)

For the last million (from 39 to 40) I took it easy though. I made an announcement on my team discord and the other people were getting excited for a new 40 but I told people I am just doing my 30-40k exp a day. When I was 1.5M away (3 days pre-pikachu event) some other level 40 said 'sure, you'll level up by the end of pikachu event' and I was like LOL NO THANKS BRO.

I only really 'grinded' on the day I hit 40. I was 75k away. Got a bit sick and went home early after meeting my raid group for 1 Kyogre, 1 Rayquaza (98%!) and 1 Ttar. That gave me 50k left (a bit less from the luvdisc catching from before) and I went home and evolved without lucky egg for the final 30k or so until I hit 40.

OP if you still have your starter I suggest evolving it for the final 500 exp. I already transferred mine, but I chose to evolve my first pikachu instead, that I kept from the 1st of August 2016.

Other meaningful ways of levelling I can think of is evolving your oldest still remaining pokemon (if still possible), evolve shiny magikarp (or any other shiny), evolve a 100%, do a mewtwo raid (hard to time but is very meaningful) or some other creative thing. You'll only hit it once :)

I never grinded exp, just cruised on through. Ended with a bunch of left over lucky eggs. Still was fun to cross over.

Didn't really go that crazy, I was very methodical about it, but there was definitely a kind of trepidation. Had a spreadsheet to track my candies and evolvables and was waiting either for double exp or the point where I could start burning all my resources to hit 40 without exp bonuses.

It is as much fun, you just set different goals. The break from the xp grind was nice but turns out I started doing it again after I reached 25 million without really trying. Grinding stardust is still necessary and raiding gives tons of exp, you accumulate it pretty easily even when not paying attention.

I went from 37 to 40 within a week, so yes :D

That's crazy! I needed at least 8 days to achieve that

I'm 2.89 million into level 39. I'm much more concerned with my level of stardust than my XP and honestly, I will be a little bit disappointed once I do hit 40 because I think some fellow raiders give me extra bonus respect since I can hit hard in a raid and I'm not 40 yet..

That's kind of what happened to me when I did a Rayquaza raid as one of my final raids as a level 39. I joined a raid group but I haven't been with this group for months and at one point I had higher exp than them (at level 36) but they went over the top and hit 40, 4 months before I did.

We did the rayquaza and I showed them my lineup (100%, 98%, 98%, 91% Dragonites maxed out, Articuno maxed out and a legacy DB/DC at the very end), they were in awe and although this only 'matched' what 2 of them had (something in the ballpark of 100%, 100%, 98%, 98% dragonites maxed out), but my lineup did beat the third level 40 who had to resort to golems and lapras to act as fillers.

They were seriously impressed with my squad as a level 39 but now as a baby level 40, I will admit that my squad is definitely on the weaker end compared to some other level 40s.

I went a little harder the couple of days right before I hit 40. They unexpectedly did a double XP event which helped. In general though I never really grinded to get there (more of a methodical pace). I always played the game in a way that I felt was fun even though others didn't necessarily play or reach 40 that way (hate sitting still, so no setting up lures in the common local lure spots, etc), so once I hit 40 it was really just more of the same as before it. Your goals do change a little bit. Assuming you already have a solid range of pokemon powered up, you will likely focus more on maxing out pokemon to level 40, powering up special projects, finishing off getting all your gold badges, getting gyms to gold, etc. Honestly I have more fun now after 40. Less pressure, not worrying about XP, mass evolves, lucky eggs, etc. You just get to play for fun again.

I recalled the relief from grinding after hitting L40. And you can really focus on other things include not playing... Of course, I'm still in the game. My current project is to power up some useful mons with legacy moves.

For my last two million to level 40 I was doing double legendary raids and evolutions with double xp, so it was easy to get 160k in each session. Now I do not care about xp that but the game isn't over. I just set new goals:
Before they changed tier 3 raid bosses I built teams to solo all of them. Now I want to power up the best legendary of each type I have. I also have certain amount of xp, walk, egg hatch, time defending, spin.. I want to do each day. That makes me enjoy the game

I raided a little more than usual, once I got close; kind of a mix of 30K of grinding and seven legendary raids per day.

I actually found it the opposite. Once I got
To the 4 mill mark I hit 40 within a week because my focus was just getting 1 mil xp. It took me two long sessions to get that done. I got the final 400k on my last day just raiding in a large city. The first 4 million did take awhile though, almost three months, so everyone has their own approach.
