Legendary Phase 1 Post-Mortem

It turns out there's no rest for the weary trainer, as we plunge into battle with those legendary beasts. But I thought it’d be fun to read how people’s experiences varied. For example, I talk to trainers who really need fast TMs, whereas I have 20 and never get charged TMs. Others hate Lugia because it’s so hard to catch, whereas it was my easiest to catch of all the birds (starting with a weird, glitchy critical on the first throw after my first raid). For me, Moltres was my most painful both in terms of catch odds and IVs.

Did you have a pretty even experience, or was one bird a pain in your ass like Moltres was for me? (It only seemed fair, as I felt abnormally lucky during the first week of Lugia and Articuno.)

The modification of raid rewards may have my skewed stats. I used golden berries pretty consistently the first couple weeks, and was also cavalier feeding them in gyms. Later, I based usage on whether the CP suggested a better IV than what I already had. Also, once I had Moltres but was trying to get a better one (I didn’t get my 88.9% listed below one until yesterday), I wasn’t terribly motivated to catch another with mediocre IVs, so my hear may not have been in the efforts.

Anyhow, here’s my final tally:

Articuno — caught 7 out of 12 (58%) | Best: A15/D13/S13
- I also had one loss that I don’t think was recorded. We started with only a minute left and couldn’t try again, and the trainers didn’t have great squads.

Zapdos — caught 6 out of 9 (67%) | Best: A15/D15/S14

Moltres: caught 9 out of 20 (45%) | Best: A15/D15/S10

Lugia — caught 6 out of 7 (86%) | Best: A15/D14/S15

Total — caught 28 out of 48 (58%)

Good topic. Don't have time right now for a full report, but I just wanted to write that I had planned to go out with a bang yesterday, given that I still didn't have a strong Lugia or Articuno despite catching plenty. Had been really unlucky with IV's.

Result: Did 7 legendary raids yesterday - most with a group of more than 100 people - caught only one. ONE! I couldn't believe it. I wasn't throwing bad or anything. Always got 9-12 balls. Hit almost everything. Usually nice throw or better. Always curved. Almost always golden razz. Oh, and the one I got? A low IV Moltres. Doh!

Anyway, I will power up my best of each of the four birds over the coming days/weeks depending on how fast I want to spend my dust.

My overall catchrate has been pretty poor. Was just below 50% before yesterdays catch-disaster. Have caught something like 30 legendaries in total.

That sucks. I caught an uno and a tres on the last day, but some people I raided with still hadn't caught either. Of course they both had mediocre stats but given the luck other people had, I can't complain.

your catch rates are pretty impressive. moltres was the worst one for me too, though lugia was very difficult as well.

articuno- caught 9/17 53%. | Best: A15/D13/S15 95IV

i consider this a success because i failed to catch my first three of these as i was throwing nervously since it was the first legendary i was going for.

Lugia- caught 6/14 for 43% | Best: A15/D11/S10 80IV

( I have others with higher IVs but its 15 attack puts its CP higher than the 82 and 87 ones i have). This mon to me was the one I cared least to catch as i am a gen 1 guy,

Moltres- caught 7/21 33% | Best: A14/D13/S15 93IV

I have one moltres with 15att, but its overall IVs are only 82. moltres was a disaster for me personally as i could never find a formula to predict its movements which always resulted in wasted balls. he was by far the hardest for me to catch in addition because he would stay high a lot and pop out A LOT. one interesting story however is that the last moltres i caught was the 93iv one and it was today. and to debunk the last throw theory, i actually caught him on my very last throw. go figure as the mon who tortured me the most out of the 4 gave me a bit of luck at the end.

zapdos- caught 9/13 69% | Best: A15/D13/S14 93IV

zapdos to me was the easiest to catch (though articuno became a lot easier for me as time went on). if it wasnt for yesterday. where i went 1/4 on zapdos raids, my % would be in the high 80s. but he got away from me yesterday and my numbers dipped. oh well. one good story here is that zapdos is my only critical catch for the legendary raids, and i believe raids in general. i got this critical catch on the last zapdos i caught earlier today. go figure as two unlikely things happened to me today in this game, the very last day these birds were available. now onto the beasts...

TOTALS: 31/65 for 48% :/

Niantic admitted that the last-ball bug was real (unlike a lot of the other hooey floating around out there), but finally fixed it in the last day or so, so good timing on that last throw!

Zapdos was easier for me, too. It zipped around sideways, but spend enough time center that I was able to land good throws there. On Molters, I could never hit it when it was high, so I'd try to wait for it to go low.

Subthread: Favorite personal moments?

The most exciting moment for me was a super-cute 6-year-old with his mom who was EXTREMELY excited to be battling a Moltres, and then to catch it. I was really worried they weren't going to catch it, and then they did, and the other adults and I were all high-fiving him. Great fun.

The funniest moment was another kid, probably 12, whose mom called him both during the Lugia raid. Unlike us adults, he had to answer that call. Once we beat it (on the second try), he said, "I don't know if I can do it — my hands are shaking!" Then, when he was trying to throw the ball, his mom called again. He answered and was all, "WHAT DO YOU WANT!?!?!"

My tally wasn't very good. Being in a rural area I only saw a handful of the birds in raids and the couple of times I did there was no one around to help. I did manage to be in a populated area for one day when the event first started so I did manage a couple:

Final tally:

Articuno - caught 2 of 2
Zapdos - 0 of 0
Motres - 0 of 0
Lugia 1 of 1

Total 3 of 3 (100%)

At least I can say I have a perfect catch rate up until now but I hope they come back and be added to the rotation again at some point so I have another shot at them.

I have a hunch Niantic will bring them back at some point — they're too big of an attraction to never bring back. My guess is they'll bring them all out for some sort of future event — hopefully when you can make it to a more populated area — and have them all out at once again. They'll probably wait a bit to build demand, though.

Too bad there's no real solution for these in rural areas. I have the luck of working downtown in a small city (Salt Lake City, Utah), so I could usually walk over and meet up with people at lunch time.

I'm still seeing the birds here in Japan. Only one Suicune so far.

I have a 100%Lugia - that will be good enough for me. My catch rate was good for Lugia till I started using Razz and Nanap - drop like crazy.

Articuno and Lugia were the difficult ones for me to catch, made worse by several raids that errored me out and didn't let me try to catch them.

Articuno: 5 out of 14 (2 glitched); 2x 93% IVs, 15/14/13 and 14/14/14 (a 98% got away)
Moltres: 5 out of 8; 15/14/14
Zapdos: 7 out of 8; 2x 91% IVs, 15/11/15 and 13/14/14
Lugia: 3 out of 12 (1 glitched, plus the 2nd best I saw errored out with 5 throws left); 15/14/14

Total, 20 out of 42, or 20 out of 39 if you discount the 3 that glitched out.

It's a little odd that the one I caught the most of was also the one with the lowest IVs. I even caught some of those Zapdos and Moltres with pinap berries, so they were just far more cooperative. I still haven't seen a 100% come up after a raid boss of any kind.

I've been getting TMs sparsely but pretty evenly, so I have about 6 of each right now. Also, Raikou was slow to arrive here, wasn't even one in the entire area for its first day.

Articuno 9 of 21 (43%) Best: 15/13/15
Zapdos 8 of 16 (50%) Best: 15/12/13
Moltres 8 of 16 (50%) Best: 15/14/13
Lugia 8 of 22 (36%) Best: 15/12/11

Overall 44%. I've got to admit my overall catch rate went way down over the last 2 weeks, when I did raids mainly for candy, golden razz, and TM's. If I already had a much higher IV bird, I often used only pinaps or no berries at all.

Lugia was by far my biggest PITA. It was my first legendary raid, and I caught it with the first ball; 84% IV with ex/fs. I thought, naively, that Legendaries would be a piece of cake; I'd never failed to catch a non-legendary raid boss before that (missed lots of Tyranitars since). Of course, Lugia was all downhill after my first, both catch rate and IV. I finally caught a 67% 10/10/10 one, just to rub salt in my wounds.

My final results:
Articuno: 1/2
Zapdos: 2/3
Moltres 0/4
Lugia 0/2

I completely agree with Moltres being a huge pain to catch.

My final scores:
Articuno 11/23 (best 96%)
Zapdos 19/20 (best 98%, also two 96%)
Moltres 15/29 (best 91%)
Lugia 12/34 (best 89%)
Overall 57/106 = 54%

So it's fair to say Zapdos is my friend and Lugia is my nemesis :-)

Articuno - caught 6 out of 9 (67%). Best: A15/D15/S13 96IV
Zapdos - caught 6 out of 12 (50%). Best: A15/D14/S10 87IV
Moltres - caught 5 out of 16 (31%). Best: A15/D11/S13 87IV
Lugia - caught 2 out of 9. (22%) Best: A13/D15/S14 93IV

Total 19/46 (41%). I am more than satisfied with my catch rate, considering I didn't master curved balls until the last few weeks where all birds were available (new player and misunderstood the curved ball bonus initially) and we had a hard time getting enough people together to do anything in my small town at that point (reward changes + people hoping for different birds to spawn + small group of players = very few days we actually raided ). I did have 10+ balls available at every raid and always used golden raz, which helped.

Moltres 9 from 19 (best 95.6)
Zapdos 7 from 12 (95.6)
Articuno 4 from 8 (91.1)
Lugia 2 from 7 (86.7)
As my record reflects I found Lugia the most difficult and in fact was one of them that I had a critical catch on.
That's also the only Bird I've powered up to 3141 which was done in a fit of determination to not let a machamp solo fail (lowest iv lol but at least I could solo machamp).

Articuno - 7/16 - 44% - 12/14/14 (89%) IV
Zapdos - 11/12 - 92% - 15/15/15 (100%) IV
Moltres - 13/27 - 48% - 15/15/15(100%) IV
Lugia - 7/18 - 39% - 14/15/12 (91%) IV

Nice note: both my perfect ones came in consecutive raids in 2 consecutive days, towards the final days when I was doing at most 2 raids per day. Before than best IV were multiple 93 for the same two birds.

I live in a pretty rural area without many players, but my new job takes me to a somewhat larger town so I got a few raids in. Got my first moltres last night!

Lugia - 1/1
Moltres - 1/1 (got it on a critical last-ball catch!)
Zapdos - 3/3
Articuno - 1/1

Not a single one of them over 80% IV, but eh, I'll take it. And yes, perfect catch rate

Still haven't seen a raid group near me. Still waiting for a game mechanic that doesn't involve driving around for hours just to stand/sit in place for 10+ minutes at a time.

My final tally:
Articuno: 0/0
Zapdos: 0/0
Moltres: 0/0
Lugia: 0/0
Total: 0/0
