Laggy app just left me power up a pkmn more than my level cap!

Just wanted to let you know...
My game is so laggy that...
I decided to max out my 93% Gengar 13 15 14 SC / SB legacy.
(I am level 37 so I can power up until 38.5)
My app is so laggy that the button 'power up' stood green after 38.5, and apparently I pushed my Gengar to level 39...LOL
The 'power up' button ghostly disappeared...
Happened to anyone?

After the last power up once one hits level 38, the button disappears

Happened to me a few levels back with my Vaporeon, was still able to power it up again when i leveled up again but only the once

Yes and now you completely ruined that Gengar because it could never be level 40 now lol.

If you had waited until you were level 38 and then do the lag trick you could have gotten the Gengar to level 40.

Never knew I could do that 'trick'.
I just went to max him.
Though how do you know we'll be able to power up to 40?
And how do you know I won't be able then?
The lag trick just came up once, randomly, but it didn't happen again with other mon (at least to me)

Also: what people do when they hit level 38 today?
Max out to level 39 or keep at 38.5, waiting for the day you could go to 40?
I'm a bit confused...
