Rather nervous about the changes in battle. Looks like two things going on - they are nerfing HP a little and buffing Def, which is fine, as long as you have it, and they are doing a bit of a stat squish to prepare for raising the level cap.

I just hope that all the pokemon I invested heavily in are still good. I remember just before the first stat change I decided to commit to Lapras to take down Dragonites, got my level 30 Lapras up over CP2500, and then he got nerfed to just under CP2200. Not fun.

Hopefully it won't be too profound, they have to know by this point that many people have sunk a lot into several different Pokemon. Would be a shame for all of those to become worthless.

Lapras was an anomaly since it was excluded from the initial stat rebalance due to increased event spawns in Japan. I guess the lesson is to now be wary of any Pokemon whose stats are 100% unchanged after this rebalance.

I completely agree about Lapras. I think it was just a one time thing due to Japan event and won't happen again with another Pokemon

I don't think they will go that far and make relevant Pokemon worthless. I would predict some of the top Pokemon being treated like the first version of Arcanine: he was extremely good, the cp rebalance didn't directly nerf him but it buffed others and created competition. Maybe we will see something similar again

If you invested in Lapras to take down Dragonites, your investment wasn't hurt much by the nerf. Lapras was still the absolute best counter to Dragonite after they applied the new CP formula to it.

And now everyone is nervous about the new changes and how they will affect the meta. The way they describe it "allowing highly defensive Pokémon to be valuable in battle by outlasting opponents rather than simply running out the clock" it sounds good.

But nobody knows. I wonder if moves and movesets will change or if it's just the battle mechanics and cp formula.

In any case, something new is always interesting. Save all your candies and dust and lets hope for the best

Each new generation has brought about move changes. Gen 2 was definitely more pronounced than Gen 3. Perhaps we'll see a bigger change since Gen 4 has fewer Pokemon than 3 had?

These changes are likely a prelude to incoming features. CP rebalance could be to prepare for a level cap increase and the emphasis on defenders being viable is likely a soft test for PvP.

Actually you are right it could be preparation for a level cap increase. I mean, the game has to give the level 40 trainers some new thrill to encourage them spend some money, I bet it's pretty stale for those up there

Disagree. All of the 40s I know are already say invested in the game and are happy to and more likely to spend the occasional coin than newer or returning players.

I know a bunch of pretty hardcore players and many of them have been losing motivation for the last 6 months. Some have moved on to Ingress because they feel like Pogo doesn't have any competitive aspects for them. These are mostly players who hit level 40 way before gen 3 came out, some even before gen 2 came out.

Which species are likely to be most affected? My guess is that Blissey and Chansey would be nerfed.

Sounds like any high-HP or low-HP Pokemon will be affected. I'd guess Snorlax is a candidate for being affected on the high end and perhaps Deoxys and the incoming Dusknoir on the low end.

Pretty much all glass cannons are glassier in Pogo compared to the baseline than they are in the main series. Flareon, Jolteon, Alakazam, Gengar, Espeon, there are a lot of low HP pokemon that would benefit from a static value being added to HP instead of just being a multiple of the base stat.

That makes me think, what if this rebalance takes the base defense/stamina stats and applies a percentile deviance depending on if they're above or below a certain value, similar to the speed mod?

Hard to say but I'm pretty sure it could make a lot of difference if they use some cutoff value that deviates significantly from the actual median of the stat.

Finally! Trainers, save your stardust!

My first prediction is that Chansey will no longer be a viable gym defender. Blissey will be nerfed considerably but still one of the top defenders, just sharing its throne with a few others. Still no hope for my beloved Poliwrath.
