Feebas evolve question

All right, just got enough candy (96) to start walking my 96% Feebas. A question - if I walk the full 20 km in one stretch, and then make some other pokemon my buddy, will the 20k I walked go away and I have to start over, or does it stick around indefinitely?

I have this nagging feeling that one of the quests for Celebi may be "Evolve a Feebas", and I'd rather be ready than have to wait to get another 100 feebas candy and walk another one. Of course, if that happens, it may be just before the "weak water fish festival" (or whatever), and the next one is easy. Still, I'm in no hurry to get the dex entry, just want to fulfill all the requirements and then sit on it for a bit, provided it doesn't reset.

The one you walk will retain the 20km when you un-buddy it. If at some point you want to evolve a different febas -- or a second one -- you need to walk it another 20km.

I expect the quests for Celebi to be related to Gen2 pokemon. Maybe evolve pokemon with items or evolve Espeon and Umbreon.

We have too small a data set to make this an "Expect"

Sure, Mew required a hard to evolve Gen1 Pokemon (Magikarp) in its list and hard to catch pokemon ditto.

Yet, Mew also required 10 Ghost Pokemon, not 10 Ghastly.

It might well come out that way, I'm just unconvinced by sample size

Didn't say I knew for sure, just that I had a feeling. Maybe it's that nagging, 'as soon as I do this I'll regret it because of something they do' we often get. Well, all right, I never had a 'as soon as I power up my Mewtwo they will nerf Shadow Ball' moment, but I did get burned with Lapras - had mine over CP 2500 at level 30, then they clocked it down to 2150 or so. Very depressing.

Anyway, want to master the mechanics of Feebas evolution. That's the core of the question.
