Dark and Ghost interchangeable for attacking?

According to the Safest Bets for Gen 4 article: "Keep in mind that Ghost and Dark are, in fact, interchangeable for attacking, as they're both super effective against Psychic and Ghost."

Really? Dark is resistant to Ghost and doubly resistant to Psychic, while Ghost is weak to itself and neutral to Psychic (of course, Gengar is weak to Psychic).

DPS may be king in legendary raids (if you have more than enough healing items), but TDO is just as important for tier 3 solos (expect Alakazam, Gengar and Starmie to return), as well as gym offence.

Hence I think that Dark Tyranitar may be a lot safer than the guide says.

You're reading too much into it. They stated the simple fact that Dark and Ghost have the same attacking type effectiveness, that's all.

Also all 3 tier 3 bosses that you mention have a charge move that specifically punishes Tyranitar. These things are more complicated than just stating what dark is resistant against.

TDO is not as important for gym offence. You need to take gyms down before the defender notices and feeds, so speed is paramount. This also ties into healing item efficiency, taking the gym fast is many times more efficient than fighting an extended battle against berries or giving up after a few fights.

I did think about Focus Blast on Alakazam and Gengar. Of course, doubly resisting it does help Ghost-types, but:
1. Only 33% of raid Alakazams and Gengars will have Focus Blast.
2. Focus Blast is really easy to dodge.
3. Tyranitar is resistant to both Gengar fast moves (which are SE into Ghost-types) and both Alakazam fast moves.

Agree that Giratina, as a dragon, is the clear winner against Starmie with Hydro Pump. Forgot to mention Jynx, who has Draining Kiss to punish Tyranitar but also has Avalanche (plus Frost Breath) to punish Giratina.

In other areas where GRB feeding is less prevalent, TDO may be more important for gym offence, but for Singapore, I agree with your comments.

When you factor in enemy moves there are circumstances when Tyranitar is a better option than ghost-types and vice versa. Dark Tyranitar will continue to be vital for the raids it's best suited against and will continue to be the king dark-type attacker until Yveltal [Darkrai too but there's potential we only receive one], it just faces stiff competition with another type.
