Break Points for Charge Attacks (revised)

Hypothetical question for those better at damage calculations than I am.

Let's say a Pokemon has a quick move break point around level 31. (Like golem against some raid bosses?) How much of a difference is there in the charge move of a Pokemon at level 31 vs level 39. Since golem was always talked about reaching a break point around there please use his charges moves as an example

Edit: I usually max out my Pokemon and would like to know how much of a waste of stardust that is just to have bragging rights about high cp

Depends how much you like to brag.

Charge moves usually have a lot more breakpoints because the numbers h are higher and rounding down doesn't affect charge moves as harshly. But going from 126 to 127 damage for each charge move is not as big a deal as going from 11 to 12 damage for each fast move.

All three stats scale with sqrt(effective level), so a level 39 should do about sqrt(34.5/30.5)-1 = 6.4% more damage than a lv 31 with its charge moves.

Are you thinking about fighting raid bosses?

Then I guess an often forgotten thing is that when fighting many raid bosses in a group, they do so much damage that you are literally spamming charge moves. One reason I always max out my attackers.

Bragging about cp is really outdated under the new gym system in my opinion. Having several break-point optimized specialized counters for each raid boss is the new cool.

To put it into perspective and answer your question: against moltres, a 15 atk iv golem would reach its last rock throw break point at level 31.5, producing 16 dph for rock throw and 126 dph for stone edge. At level 39, it would produce 16 dph and 133 dph, respectively. This means that the kill speed difference between a level 31.5 golem and a level 39 golem is minimal.

Provided you don't swim in dust and candies, you would therefore be way better off (candy-wise and dust-wise) as well as a bigger help to your fellow raiders if you powered up two Golems from 20 to 31.5 than one Golem from 20 to 39.
