51% Shiny or 96% Standard?

TL;DR summary: if you had these two Magikarp options at the end of the water event, would you power up a 51% shiny to be your 12th-highest CP mon, or a 96% standard to be your highest CP mon? The other one would have to wait 3-4 months to evolve.

This is less of a "what should I power up" question and more of a "what would you power up" question. I'm just curious. I think I know what I'm going to do (although I'll wait for the end of the event to do it).

I live in a low Magikarp area, and evolved my first Gyarados in late February. With this event I'll probably have just enough candy to evolve and power up one of these two (dust requirements are similar):

Shiny 51% (10A/1D/12S)
CP 2886 at Lvl 35.5
Would be my 12th highest CP mon (13th after evolving & powering my first Dragonite sometime in the next month or so) Normal 96% (14A/15D/14S)
CP 3050 at Lvl 35.5
Would be my top CP mon (2nd after getting that Dragonite, and would probably hold that #2 spot in my roster for several months)

My local gym situation is: I can usually place each of my dozen or so 28xx-29xx mons 3rd from the top in stable Level 9 or 10 gyms, but sometimes they only reach the 4th or 5th spot. Each week I get kicked out of one or two of these gyms and find one or two more to join - so that I'm typically defending twelve. (The extra two are merely insurance so that I'm likely to collect for the full ten when collection time comes.)

Occasionally I see some especially-stable Level 9 gyms that I would like to join but don't, because a high 28xx - low 29xx would sit at the bottom for a relatively short time due to partial take-downs and occasional shaving. However, a 3050 would sit 3rd or 4th from the top and stay for several weeks.

I don't like gym battling all that much (and look forward to future updates), but my local circumstances are fortunate enough that I'll probably keep working to hold 10 - because so far it's netted me a little over 20k coins and 1 million dust.

Both but I'd prioritize the 96%. If you don't need either I'd evolve the shiny as a trophy since the red Gyarados is so iconic.

The shiny one.

Start with the 96% and hope for Dragon Tail for a better defender.

if you already have a quality Gary I would go red
the 96% could yield a disappointing move set but you'll know the shiny will be red.
on top of that with Mons with high base stats i think Iv's matter less.
so saying I have b/DP(100%), b/hp(96%) and b/twister(98%) so only really need DT/O as a more effective dragonite killer then my b/dp

I think I will go for both. Even if the shiny magikarp will continue to exist in the wild after the event, chances will slim down to find one with proper IV as they will become less common.

I currently have a "strong" (62-80 IV) shiny and a 95.6% IV regular karp, both of which I am thinking to power up after the event.

I would start with the 96% because a new high-cp 'mon is just too enticing. But I would also start walking with the other as my buddy. Considering that Magikarp / Gyarados earns a candy for every kilometer walked, it would only take a few days to have them both maxed.

I'm in the same predicament. I caught a 10CP 16-33% shiny, but I have a 170CP 100% regular I've been holding on to. Tough choice!

Personally, I would go with the normal 96% mon, since it will be a lot more useful CP-wise. I think the whole idea of "shiny" pokemon is pretty dumb - it reminds me of those useless various party hat Pikachus that came out for Xmas and Pokemon Day. (How come people are all excited about shiny pokemon anyway, especially since the party hat Pikachus seemed to be universally panned?)
