Pokemon Go Buddy System

With the 0.37.0 update, trainers can now assign a Pokemon as a walking buddy.

Aside from providing companionship, your buddy would occasionally find candies of its Pokemon species, which you can use to power up or evolve your buddy or others of its kind.

The Buddy System

To assign a new buddy, click on your trainer portrait, then select Buddy from the bottom right soft button.

On the buddy status screen, you can check the how far you have walked with your current buddy, or swap out your buddy with a different Pokemon. After assigning a Pokemon as your buddy, it'll begin appearing with your trainer portrait. Smaller Pokemon could even rest on your shoulders!

Note that buddy Pokemon must be with you at all times, thus cannot be assigned as a gym defender.

Your buddy will also have its own icon on the main screen. It keeps track of how far you traveled together. Every set distance, 1 to 5 km depending on its species (see table below), it'll find one Pokemon candy.

Occasionally, your buddy may find two candy per set distance traveled. The mechanism behind it is still unknown.

Evolving with Buddies

Ever wonder how long it'll take to evolve a Pokemon using only buddy candies?

Buddies share the same 10.5 km speed limit as hatching eggs. If you never receive any bonus candies, and always travel at speed limit, below are the minimum distance and time required to fully evolving a Pokemon using solely Buddy candies:

Easter Egg

While Pikachu is a shoulder-sized buddy, it would refuse to rest on your shoulder initially. Pikachu wants to find ten Pikachu candies on its own first before climbing onto your shoulder.
