Attacking Movesets
Offensive Moves Explanation
  • Rock Throw is generally Golem’s best quick move and why you’d you use Golem on offensive over the generally superior Rhydon.

  • Mud Slap and the legacy move Mud Shot are roughly on par with each other and are outclassed by Rhydon’s Mud Slap movesets.

  • Stone Edge is generally superior to Earthquake, even in scenarios where Earthquake has super effective damage. Stone Edge hits faster, giving it higher DPS and allowing for less mishaps with dodging. Rock-type has better coverage than ground. This is isn’t to say Earthquake is a poor move. The difference in their performance is usually 1 to 2 seconds of battle time.

  • Stone Edge is on par with Rock Blast. A single bar charge move poses better dogability. A 3 bar charge move results in less instances of over-kill and having to hold onto your charge move. Both attacks have great DPS.

  • Ancient Power is not only a legacy move, but is significantly inferior to the aforementioned charge moves in every way.

Defending Movesets
Defensive Moves Explanation
  • Rock Throw is on par with Mud Slap. While it deals less defense DPS, Rock has superior type coverage. While Mud Slap has better energy gain, fights with golem tend to go too quickly for it to have much impact.

  • Mud Shot is not only a legacy move, but is clearly inferior to the aforementioned quick moves.

  • Rock Blast is arguably superior to Stone Edge. In general, multi bar charge moves serve better on defense since they have more opportunities to land an un-dodged hit or even get used at all. That said, Stone Edge has a fast animation time and early damage window; it is by no means a poor move for defense.

  • Ancient Power is slightly inferior to Rock Blast. Despite having the same energy usage and more power, it’s longer animation time and later damage window makes it more avoidable. That said, it’s not too far behind Rock Blast.

  • Earthquake is arguably Golem’s worst charge move. Earthquake isn’t bad, it’s just not as good as Golem’s other options. It’s long animation and late damage window results in it being dodged more often than not. The difference between a charge move being significant or insignificant to defense is if it hits or not, especially for single bar charge moves.

Rating Explanation:

Golem is a perfect example of how poor defensive typing can hold back a Pokemon with decent stats and powerful STAB quick moves. Its Ground/Rock typing leaves Golem doubly vulnerable to Water and Grass-type attacks, while also including a weakness to Fighting and Ice-types; attack types that are included in the arsenal of some of the best and most common attackers in the game (namely Vaporeon, Exeggutor, Lapras, and Machamp). While Rhydon is in the same situation, Rhydon’s massive base stat total allows it to overcome these odds. This isn’t to say Golem is completely inadvisable on defense, it’s just not as good as many other options.

While Rhydon outclasses Golem as a defender, Golem has one major advantage over Rhydon as an attacker: the Rock-type quick move Rock Throw. In fact, Golem is currently the only Pokemon with access to a Rock-type quick move that also has stats to back it up. This makes Golem not only a very decent generalist attacker, but also a powerful counter to Flying, Ice, Fire, and Bug-type Pokemon. Golem’s Ground-type STAB quick moves also make it a powerful counter to Electric-types.

A powerful counter to Flying, Fire, Ice, and Electric-type Pokemon; which three unreleased Pokemon do you see Golem taking down like none other? Just something to think about for the future.
