Offensive Moves Explanation
  • Bite outclasses Snarl from a DPS perspective, but unfortunately is a legacy move.

  • Fire Fang is often superior to Snarl, as it benefits from STAB. However, the latter provides wider type coverage.

  • Fire Blast is the preferred charge move due to its massive power and STAB.

  • Flamethrower is on par with Fire Blast DPS-wise, but can space damage across multiple charges, making it a viable, albeit legacy, alternative.

  • Wild Charge is generally superior to Crunch and Bulldoze, offering higher DPS for a lower cooldown.
Defensive Moves Explanation
  • Snarl is often superior to Fire Fang due to increased type coverage and more favorable matchups.

  • Wild Charge is often preferred to combat any Water-types used to counter Arcanine

  • Bulldoze is inferior to Wild Charge DPS-wise, but is favored to take on Rock-types that would be brought in as a counter. Do note that the former is a legacy move.

  • Crunch is often superior to Fire Blast due to its 3 bar nature coupled with wider type coverage.

  • Flamethrower is generally superior to Fire Blast due to its 2 bar nature and less exploitable dodge windows. Alas, the former is a legacy move.

Rating Explanation:

Arcanine is an archetypal Fire-type Pokemon: a powerful attacking threat with some serious defensive weaknesses, functioning well when he is able to line up against Pokemon that don’t resist Fire-type attacks.

As a pure Fire-type, Arcanine has one role: destroy Grass, Bug, Ice, and Steel-type Pokemon. Though its other moves may encourage diversity, this is what it is built for and does best. However, the times have not been kind to Arcanine. To begin with, its preferred matchups aren't too common, and Fire doesn't contribute to many of the raids in high demand. Furthermore, the addition of Houndoom and Tyranitar vastly decreased the novelty of Bite/Snarl.

Even before the release of Moltres, fellow Fire-type Flareon simply outclassed Arcanine in Atk, Def, and moveset. In addition, it's hard countered by raid bosses who are in demand, such as Tyranitar, as well as leftover gym kings like Vaporeon and Rhydon.

His role may be that of a second-class niche, but Arcanine is nothing if not reliable. To raise a strong Flareon first requires RNG to work its magic on Eevee (assuming you’ve already used your “Pyro” trick). That being said, it's probably best to save your Stardust for something better.

Raid Boss Counters
SupremeOverall best counter always. Almost always top in DPS and very high in survivability. The Pokemon you want for the job.
GoodThe next best if you don’t have Supreme Pokemon.
TankWhen you’re down to your 5-6th Pokemon and need to hold the line and not suck while doing it. Tanks always have more survivability than Supreme, but less DPS than Good.
GlassMore DPS than Good with significantly less survivability. Note: Less DPS than Supreme.
