Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Razor Leaf paired with Solar Beam makes Vileplume’s best attacking moveset.

  • Solar Beam is frequently superior to Petal Blizzard due to its massive base power.

  • Acid and Moonblast have no place on an offensive Vileplume.

Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Acid and Razor Leaf have similar performance in practice. While Razor Leaf has higher power on defense, it's also resisted by the common dragon types that are used to clean gyms, as well as Metagross. Acid is able to at least hit dragons for neutral damage, but Metagross and other steel-types take basically nothing due to double-resisting it.Overall, Acid pulls ahead a bit.

  • While all of Vileplume’s charge moves are poor on defense, Petal Blizzard stands out by having an early damage window.

Pokemon Raid & Gym Overview

Vileplume’s advantage lies in that it is among the most easily obtained Grass-type Pokemon. Once trainers start stocking up on Exeggutor, Sceptile, Venusaur, Victreebel, and Shiftry, Vileplume becomes yesterday’s news. It doesn’t look like much now, but it was the go-to Vaporeon slayer in the early days of Pokemon GO.

Speaking of the early days, back then it was also an okay defender, being the most easily obtained Vaporeon wall. These days you might want to use something else for defense. The meta just isn’t what it used to be. Ok, that’s enough GO analysis for grandpa.

PvP Rating Explanations

  • Razor Leaf has the honor of being the single highest damaging quick move in PVP. However, its energy-gain is sub-par.
  • Acid has far less power than Razor Leaf and only a tiny bit more energy gain, making it an inferior choice in general. Its only use is if you know as a fact that Vileplume will be up against a Grass type or a Fairy type that isn't also weak to grass.
  • Solar Beam is a very strong move in PVP, but it's also one of the most expensive in terms of energy, meaning VIleplume will likely only get off one per battle.
  • Petal Blizzard has less damage per energy spent, but it also charges faster than Solar Beam, making it the preferred move.
  • Moonblast allows Vileplume to hit many big-name threats for super effective damage, making it the best secondary move to run.

Vileplume is a good budget Pokemon in Great League PVP, but not really a great one. It has a typing combo that, while common, does allow it several advantages; in particular resisting some of the best moves in the game such as Counter, Power-Up Punch, and Hydro Cannon. Vileplume also has great coverage itself with Moonblast, allowing it to hit big-name fighting, dragon, and dark types very hard.

However, many of these advantages are off-set by similar disadvantages. Vileplume's typing is very frequently covered by the secondary moves of Pokemon that it would otherwise counter, with Ice in particular being a very common coverage type. It also doesn't have the best stat-spread for the Great League, leaving it a bit frail at or around the 1500 CP mark.

Overall, Vileplume is a great Pokemon to add to your Great League team early on as Oddish is fairly common in many biomes. On top of this, it shouldn't be too hard to find one close to the 1500 CP mark when evolved. However, as you begin building a stronger Great League team, Vileplume will become more of a niche pick than something to build your team around.

In the Ultra League, many of the same points apply but to a much lesser degree. While Vileplume can exist in the Ultra League, it doesn't have much utility and is entirely eclipsed by Venusaur.

Vileplume has no place in the Master League.
