PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Water Gun should be paired with Hydro Cannon. This set is better than the Ground-type set against most targets, including Rock-types.
  • Mud Shot should be paired with Earthquake. This set has an advantage against Steel, Electric, and Poison-types.
  • Sludge Wave is underwhelming in every aspect.
  • Surf has been replaced by Swampert's Community Day move.
  • Muddy Water as a 3-bar move can be used in a pinch right before Swampert faints, but otherwise is inferior to even Surf

PVE Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Mud Shot is slightly superior to Water Gun, offering slightly better coverage and cross-weather benefits.
  • Hydro Cannon is superior to Sludge Wave and Surf, having a lower energy cost than the former and earlier dodge window than both.
  • Muddy Water can be used more often as a 3-bar move, though it has a later dodge window than Hydro Cannon
  • Sludge Wave offers counter coverage against Grass-types, however.
  • Earthquake is underwhelming in every aspect despite having STAB.

PVE Overview

Swampert’s strong, well-rounded stats in the main series games don’t translate quite so well to GO, where it suffers from lacking power. Although it has good Water- and Ground-type moves, other Pokemon do those roles better. Mudkip's Community Day blessed Swampert with access to the extremely powerful Hydro Cannon, which makes it the top non-legendary Water-type attacker in the game. Due to the relatively ease of access, Swampert is also a much cheaper alternative to Kyogre at the cost of not too much in terms of performance.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Mud Shot + Hydro Cannon and Earthquake

This moveset is geared towards getting to the charge moves as quickly as possible, and Mud Shot offers the highest energy generation in the game at the cost of low damage output.

The addition of Hydro Cannon, thanks to Mudkip's Community Day, gives Swampert a much stronger charge move that replaces Surf, and enables wins against common Pokemon like Skarmory. The low 40 energy cost also makes Hydro Cannon the primary charge move, and can be used frequently to pressure shields.

Earthquake is preferred for its high STAB damage output, in addition to its wide coverage.

Water Gun + Hydro Cannon and Earthquake

This moveset is meant for general coverage and relying more on the fast move of Water Gun for damage.

Hydro Cannon is still preferred for its high STAB damage and low energy cost. Earthquake might not be used much due to its greater energy cost, but is still valued for its excellent STAB damage and Ground-type coverage.

What about Muddy Water?

Muddy Water is a very disappointing addition to Swampert for PvP. Hydro Cannon deals roughly 257% of the damage that Muddy Water can do, for only extra 5 energy. While Muddy Water does have a perk of reducing the opponent's ATK stage by 1, the 30% chance to proc the debuff makes it unreliable to use for consistent results.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 4 / 5

Swampert was popular quite early in PvP thanks to the Silph Arena's Boulder Cup, but since then has somewhat fallen out of favor. Generally speaking Swampert is a solid pick for Great League, with well-rounded stats, a single weakness to Grass-type attacks (which it's doubly weak to), and an excellent moveset partly thanks to Mudkip's Community Day. Unfortunately Swampert has to compete with quite a few other Water/Ground type picks (AKA "Mud Bois") which includes Whiscash, Quagsire, and its pre-evolution Marshtomp. How Swampert stands out from the crowd is with access to the best Water-type charge move in the game, Hydro Cannon, which gives it certain niches over its competition. While Hydro Cannon is one of the best charge moves in the game, Water-typing offensively doesn't cover as many relevant typings as Ground-types, which makes Whiscash more preferable due to its access to Mud Bomb. Overall, Swampert is still very good at what it does and can compete very well in the meta depending on the format you're playing in.

Ultra League: 4.5 / 5

Swampert is very good for Ultra League partly thanks to the numerous Steel-types in the meta, in addition to the relatively few Grass-types compared to Great League. Dominance over many of the "anti-Giratina" picks which are mostly Dark-types and also Snorlax, in addition to numerous wins against counters to those picks (AKA Fighting-types), makes Swampert very appealing to use. It should also be noted that Swampert can tie or even narrowly beat Giratina Altered Forme depending on movesets and shielding scenarios, which would possibly make this Pokemon a 5/5, if it were not for the lack of consistency in that matchup.

Master League: 4.5 / 5

With a max CP of 2974, Swampert doesn't have the stats that many Pokemon in this league flex. What Swampert does have going for it is a very limited and almost non-existent weakness in Master League, and access to a very powerful moveset. Generally speaking Swampert has a very high win rate overall, with most losses being attributed to opponents who resist either Water or Ground-type attacks. Wins against numerous Steel-types are to be expected, with additional perks for winning against the Tyranitar that's meant to shut down Giratina. Overall Swampert is an excellent pick for Master League, and also serves as a terrific bodyguard for Giratina.
