PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Rock Throw is superior to Ember for damage and type coverage.

  • Stone Edge is superior to Heat Wave and Overheat for reasons stated above.

PVE Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Rock Throw does 25% more DPS than Ember, and does neutral damage against Magcargo’s biggest counter, Water-type.

  • Stone Edge is Magcargo’s best charge move on defense for reasons stated above.

  • Overheat and Heat Wave are too easy to dodge, and have poor defensive typing.

PVE Overview

There isn’t a place for Magcargo to exist in the current meta. Water-types are very common. Rock Throw + Stone Edge can be a good moveset to take down Flying-types like Charizard, but Magcargo is outclassed by Pokemon with higher stats like Golem and Rhydon.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Rock Throw + Stone Edge + Overheat

Rock Throw is generally more preferable than Ember since it has a considerably higher DPT (Damage Per Turn), at the cost of slightly less EPT (Energy Per Turn).

Stone Edge sees the most usage due to its significantly cheaper energy cost compared to Magcargo's other charge moves, in addition to it being the Rock-type charge move available. Overheat costs 5 more energy than Heat Wave, but deals way more damage for its insane energy cost. You might never get into a situation where Magcargo survives long enough to utilize an 80-energy charge move, but if you do, consider using it when shields are down.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 2 / 5

Magcargo is a difficult Pokemon to use for PvP in general. A total of 7 resistances doesn't necessarily make up for its two double weaknesses to Water and Ground-types, which are quite common in the meta. If Magcargo is able to avoid its four weaknesses, then its decent bulk and considerable fast move damage output allows it to be serviceable when shields are down. A moveset that's very energy-demanding combined low energy generation means Magcargo is incapable of applying significant shield pressure. Interestingly enough, Slugma would have a more preferable moveset for PvP due to less energy cost. Overall a somewhat disappointing contender that has to rely on closed settings like the TSR Rainbow Cup to limit the number of foes that can abuse its weaknesses. At least the cost to unlock its almost never used second charge move is relatively cheap.

Ultra League: 0 / 5

With a max CP of 1702 Magcargo is limited to the Great League.

Master League: 0 / 5

Consider something else.
