Rating Explanation:

Steelix is a perfect example of the CP based gym sorting system injusticing a very potent gym defender. Its impressive defense, defensive typing, and high base power quick moves patch up any deficiencies caused by its low base stat total. Unless Niantic alters how Pokemon are treated in gyms, Steelix will likely always be condemned to the bottom, but there it will hold the line well.

As an attacker, Steelix is limited to more specialized roles due to Steel-type’s poor offensive coverage. Even in these roles, Steelix often finds itself outclassed by Pokemon who can get the job done faster. That said, while Steelix won’t get the job done quickly or as efficiently as other Pokemon, its impressive defense stat allows for less cautious dodging practices.

Offensive Moves Explanation
  • Iron Tail is generally superior to Dragon Tail on offense due to gaining STAB. Dragon Tail isn’t too far behind, having better type coverage and energy gain. If your target resists Steel-type damage, Dragon Tail is slightly better.

  • Heavy Slam is slightly superior to Earthquake. While they have the same DPS on paper, Earthquake’s longer animation time leaves Steelix vulnerable to charge moves. That, and Heavy Slam has the advantage of having multiple charge bars, meaning you won’t have to hold out or worry about over-kill as much. This is isn’t to say Earthquake is a poor move. The difference in their performance is usually 2 to 3 seconds of battle time.

  • Crunch is underwhelming in every aspect.

Defending Movesets
Defensive Moves Explanation
  • Dragon Tail is on par with Iron Tail. While Iron Tail has STAB, the majority of Steelix’s counters resist Steel-type damage. In a neutral situation, both moves have the same base damage but Dragon Tail has slightly better energy gain.

  • Heavy Slam is on par with Crunch for similar reasons. While Heavy Slam has STAB, Crunch has superior type coverage. Due to Steelix’s slower energy gain (due to having large defense and low HP), Crunch may arguably be slightly better than Heavy Slam due to being more deployable. That said, Crunch is less useful against Steelix’s Fighting-type counters.

  • Earthquake is arguably Steelix’s worst charge move. Earthquake isn’t bad, it’s just not as good as Steelix’s other options. It’s long animation and late damage window results in it being dodged more often than not. The difference between a charge move being significant or insignificant to defense is if it hits or not, especially for single bar charge moves. Considering Steelix’s weaker energy gain, it’s even possible it may not even be deployed at all.
