Offensive Moves Explanation
  • Iron Tail is generally superior to Dragon Tail on offense due to gaining STAB. If your target resists Steel-type damage, Dragon Tail is slightly better.

  • Heavy Slam is slightly superior to EarthquakeHeavy Slam has the advantage of having multiple charge bars and shares the same type as Iron Tail.

  • Crunch is underwhelming in every aspect.

Defensive Moves Explanation
  • Dragon Tail is on par with, if not slightly better than Iron Tail. While Iron Tail has STAB, the majority of Steelix’s counters resist Steel-type damage.

  • Heavy Slam is on par with Crunch for similar reasons. While Heavy Slam has STAB, Crunch has a different resistance profile. Due to Steelix’s slower energy gain (due to having large Def), Crunch's extra bar may arguably give it a slight edge.

  • Earthquake is arguably Steelix’s worst charge move. Its long animation and late damage window results in it being dodged more often than not.

Rating Explanation:

Steelix is tailored to be a defensive behemoth, possessing the second highest Defense stat in the game and one of the best defensive types. Steelix is one of the bulkiest defenders there is, being effective at wasting an attacker's time even in disadvantageous matchups. It somewhat unfortunately has weaknesses to many common Pokemon, such as Machamp, Vaporeon, and Flareon, but it does pose a thorn in the side of players who default to Dragonite or Tyranitar for attacking gyms.

Steelix's Attack stat is too poor to be considered on offense, although it can serve as a fair anchor in contexts such as Articuno raids.
