PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Iron Tail usually beats Dragon Tail on offense due to STAB.

  • Heavy Slam shares typing with Iron Tail and outdamages Earthquake, Steelix’s other STAB charge move.

  • Steelix’s offense is bad, and Crunch will only make it worse.

PVE Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Steelix’s fast moves are both great, but Dragon Tail is less likely to be resisted by Steelix’s usual counters.

  • Crunch and Heavy Slam are fantastic options, each with multiple bars and relatively early damage windows.

  • Earthquake is a joke on defense.

PVE Overview

Steelix is tailored to be a defensive behemoth, possessing an enormous Def stat and one of the best defensive types. Steelix is one of the bulkiest defenders there is, being effective at wasting an attacker's time even in disadvantageous matchups. It unfortunately has weaknesses to many common Pokemon, such as Machamp, Vaporeon, and Flareon, but it poses a thorn in the side of players who default to Dragonite or Tyranitar for attacking gyms.

Steelix's Atk is too poor to be considered on offense, although it can serve as a fair anchor in contexts such as Articuno raids.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Dragon Tail + Crunch and Earthquake

This move-set provides great coverage and mind games when it comes to Pokemon Go PvP Battles. Dragon Tail, having 3.00 DPT (Damage Per Turn) and 3.33 EPT (Energy Per Turn), provides great coverage to Dragons such as Altaria, while also doing heavy neutral damage to most of the meta! Having such a strong fast move and pairing it with key charge moves Crunch and Earthquake, we start to see some great potential. Crunch, with 70 Damage and 35 Energy cost, is a solid low cost charge move that can cover the Ghost and Psychic Pokemon while doing some nice neutral damage to 13 of the 18 types in the game! On top of all of that, it has the potential to bait out crucial shields from your opponent who may think it’s an Earthquake! Earthquake, with 120 Damage and 65 Energy cost, is what gives Steelix the noteworthy fear factor! Having a reasonably low energy cost and huge damage output, it will put fear into the heart of your opponent and obliterate Pokemon like Skuntank and Lucario!

Dragon Tail + Crunch and Heavy Slam

This move-set is more geared towards Rock, Ice, Fairy coverage with Heavy Slam. Still having Dragon Tail, 3.00 DPT (Damage Per Turn) and 3.33 EPT (Energy Per Turn), gives you that solid Dragon coverage and neutral damage. Crunch, 70 Damage and 35 Energy cost, gives you good neutral damage and Psychic/Ghost coverage. Heavy slam comes into play based on either what cup you are in or what role you want Steelix to fulfill. Ideally you want to role with Earthquake, but Heavy Slam has its place! With 70 Damage and 50 Energy cost, Heavy Slam charges quickly like Crunch while giving you the Rock, Ice and Fairy coverage!

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 4 / 5

Steelix is solid, sturdy, reliable and beefy. Just a well rounded Pokemon who has a great fast move, shield baiting hard hitting charge move and a 1 shot charge move. It’s scary in the right hands, but with all this greatness there is still weakness. The general meta caters towards the Counter move users like Medicham and Lucario, but Steelix deserves a solid 4 out of 5 for the Great League!

Ultra League: 4 / 5

Steelix doesn’t slow his roll when it comes to the Ultra League either! Still ranked in the top 11 according to PvPoke.com, Steelix takes names with ease! With that strong move-set of Dragon Tail + Crunch and Earthquake, it can devastate enemies who don’t know what move is coming! Solid investment if you choose to fight with him in the Ultra League!

Master League: 2 / 5

Steelix is out of his prime now, maxing out at 2414 Combat Power, he really lacks the stats to compete with the best of the best! If yours is maxed, stick to the Ultra League battles as he will fair much better there!
