PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Bite can be paired with Shadow Ball for effectiveness vs. Psychic and Ghost-types.

  • Air Slash can be paired with Sludge Bomb to specialize against Fairy and Grass-types.

  • Although Air Cutter has STAB, it’s an awful charge move.

  • Ignore Return, as it can't deal Super Effective damage.

PVE Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Air Slash is the go-to defensive fast move, having STAB and more power than Bite.

  • Sludge Bomb is superior for combining high power with an early damage window.

  • Shadow Ball can be seen coming from a mile away, but it nails Psychic-type counters if not dodged.

  • Air Cutter is weak, fairly easy to dodge, and resisted by some of Crobat’s counters. However, it can deal some damage to Machamp, which is the main reason that Crobat should even be considered on defense.

  • Return is three-bar and one of the hardest moves to dodge, but its damage is very low.

PVE Overview

Crobat is a very cool Pokemon let down by unviable Atk and iffy moves. Crobat’s typing gives it 3 double resistances and potential access to a moveset effective against all 3 of these types. Unfortunately, it’s not up to snuff as a Flying-type attacker. It can be useful for early to mid game players who find a high-level Zubat and want to be more effective against Grass/Fighting type raids in particular, but its utility just isn't worth any meaningful investment.

In a gym lineup, Crobat can briefly annoy Machamp looking for a sweep. That's about all it does, though.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Air Slash OR Bite+Sludge Bomb and Shadow Ball

Air Slash's balanced 3 DPT (Damage Per Turn) and 3 EPT (Energy Per Turn) combines with a STAB bonus and surprisingly good neutral coverage to come out on top in most matchups. However, with the plethora of Steel types in particular running around most PVP tiers and formats, Bite may be the preferred choice in some cases. It has the same basic 3 DPT and 3 EPT, and has a different but still stellar effectiveness profile. The two issues are the fact that it lacks STAB, and is far less less effective when Crobat is needed to take out Fairy types. Sludge Bomb (80 Power/50 Energy) is Crobat's STAB charged move of choice, sporting good power and relatively low energy cost. However, it's resisted by much of the metagame, which makes Shadow Ball (100 Power/55 Energy) the secondary charged move of choice for its high power and wide neutral coverage.

Air Slash OR Bite+Return and Shadow Ball OR Sludge Bomb.

Return (50 Power/40 Energy) is generally an underwhelming attack due to its low power per energy ratio and less than interesting Normal typing. However, it's Crobat's lowest energy move, meaning it can be used for some mind-games and shield baiting in some cases. For the last move, Shadow Ball is the preferred move due to its high power and neutral coverage, though Sludge Bomb is viable as well for specialist matchups.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 1 / 5

Crobat has no real niche in the Great League due to its frailty. If you want a venomous bat in the tier, look at its pre-evolution, Golbat.

Ultra League: 2.5 / 5

Crobat has some nice specialist matchups in the Ultra League, in particular removing Fairy types and Charm users from the field with a powerful, STAB Sludge Bomb. It also has great matchups against anything Grass or Fighting types, in particular invalidating the use of the outstanding moves Counter and Power-Up Punch. However, when not played to its strengths, Crobat is basically made of paper. In order to function it needs support, and it needs to be played for support.

Master League:  1.5 / 5

Once again, Crobat is invalidated. Its CP just can't keep up with the juggernauts that clash in the Master League, and its niche is far less important.
