Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Waterfall tends to edge out Water Gun, although either can come out ahead depending on the matchup.
  • Bite has barely any offensive utility.
  • Hydro Cannon is superior to Hydro Pump for a full Water-type attacking moveset.
  • Ice Beam and Crunch serve no purpose on an offensive Feraligatr.

Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Waterfall’s big hits will outperform Bite and Water Gun every time.
  • Ice Beam covers Grass-types and Dragonite on top of being strong and not trivial to dodge.
  • Crunch has 3 bars, an early damage window, and ample power to reliably dent attackers.
  • Hydro Pump hits hard and swiftly, but a demotivated Feraligatr probably won’t get one off.  Hydro Cannon hits harder and being a 2 bar makes it more likely to be used.

Rating Explanation

Feraligatr has potential in its decent stat spread and robust move pool. It has the same Atk stat as Vaporeon, making it usable (but unfortunately outclassed) on offense.

With the addition of Waterfall to its movepool, Feraligatr on defense can leave some attackers smarting, although its bulk is nothing to write home about.

Community Day January 2019 Update

From Community Day January 2019 Guide

Analysis of Hydro Cannon Feraligatr is pretty straightforward. It’s good. Here are the bullet points.

  • #2 Water DPS behind the Legendary Kyogre
  • Roughly halfway between Kyogre and Gyarados in DPS, though slightly closer to Kyogre
  • Similar TDO to Gyarados
  • Also outperforms Venusaur in relevant matchups (Rhydon, Golem)
  • Future starters will outclass it if they also get Hydro Cannon

Hydro Cannon Feraligatr sits at a place probably most comparable to Blast Burn Charizard, solidly the 2nd best of its type behind a legendary, with future Community Day starters threatening that position. While Kyogre is incredibly strong and one of the best investments in the game, it is legendary and requires Rare Candy. Supplemental teams of Feraligatr can be powered up on the cheap.

It should also be made very clear that Swampert is by no means guaranteed to receive Hydro Cannon on Community Day, so Feraligatr could last even longer as the highest DPS non-Legendary Water Pokemon.
