PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Fire Spin is the best fast move for Moltres, and benefits from STAB.
  • Wing Attack is inferior against Grass and Bug-types, but leaps ahead against Fighting-types.
  • Sky Attack is one of the best charge moves and has STAB on Moltres.
  • Overheat is Moltres’s second best charge move, with a higher base power and shorter cooldown than Fire Blast.
  • Heat Wave isn’t worth mentioning.

PVE Overview

Moltres claims the role of the premier Fire-type attacker in Pokemon GO while also placing high on the neutral offensive DPS ranks. It has a very high ATK stat paired with excellent fast and charge move options. Moltres thrives in locales where sunny/clear whether predominates, reliably getting a 20% DPS boost.

Moltres remains near the top of the chart as a Fire attacker. It's been dethroned from the Fire-type DPS throne by Blaziken since it received Blast Burn, and it's still beaten by Entei in TDO, who trades a little DPS for more bulk. However, on that front, Moltres’s double resistance to Grass and Bug-type attacks makes it even bulkier than Entei in these matchups. Regardless, Moltres remains, on average, the top overall Fire-type attacker in the game.

Moltres' exclusive move, Sky Attack, makes it a top contender for neutral DPS and DPS against Grass and Bug-type, as explained in our article

Sadly, Fire-types currently have limited raid utility, but Moltres may find itself an optimal counter in many Grass or Bug-type raid battles.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Fire Spin + Sky Attack and Ancient Power or Overheat

Fire Spin is the preferred fast move, with more damage output than Wing Attack and slightly less energy gain. Wing Attack has somewhat of a niche if Fire Spin would be resisted, but otherwise is inferior.

Sky Attack is the primary charge move for Moltres, sporting good power and costing less energy than other charge moves. Ancient Power ties for the lowest energy cost among Moltres' charge moves, and also provides wide coverage. Overheat demands an insane 80 energy, which most of the time is too expensive to use, though it can threaten to KO most opponents if unshielded.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 2 / 5

Moltres is of limited use in the Great League. Its restricted CP hurts it substantially due to a very high ATK stat, as well as its weakness to many common coverage types, in particular anything Rock-type. That said, in matchups where Fire and/or Flying-type is effective, Moltres can act as a niche pick for the tier.

Ultra League: 2 / 5

Moltres operates in the Ultra League decently, using its high attack stat, typing, and good moveset to counter threats such as Lucario, Venusaur and Meganium. However, it's also countered extremely hard by big names such as Giratina and Lapras. If played to its strengths, Moltres can definitely be worth a team-slot, but just be aware that a bad matchup will invalidate it very quickly.

Master League: 2.5 / 5

Much the same as its performance in the Ultra League, Moltres has a solid niche as a Fire/Flying type attacker, ripping apart threats such as Metagross, Lucario, and even some variants of Mewtwo. That said, it still needs to be played smart around anything that could pack Rock-type coverage, or resistance to Fire Spin, and appreciates a shield or two in order to keep its blazing warpath going as long as possible.
