Offensive Moves Explanation
  • Bug Bite is preferred over Rock Smash for STAB and unique type coverage against Grass, Psychic, and Dark-types.

  • Rock Smash is still a strong pick for its high damage, but with Pinsir lacking Fighting-type STAB, it’s outclassed by others.

  • Fury Cutter does less DPS than Bug Bite but generates energy faster. It’s inferior, but still usable.

  • Pairing Pinsir’s Bug-type fast moves with the charge move X-Scissor is the best pick for Pinsir’s attacking niche.

  • A Fighting-type charge move pairs well with Rock Smash for taking out Tyranitar. Submission is lower DPS, so Close Combat is preferred.

  • Vice Grip is not a good move. Use your TM here.
Defensive Moves Explanation
  • On defense, Rock Smash does more than double the DPS of other quick moves.

  • X-Scissor is Pinsir’s least reactable charge move but will be ineffective against Pinsir’s counters.

  • Submission has better type coverage than X-Scissor but is more reactable.

  • A 1 bar charge move such as Close Combat will not be very good due to Pinsir’s low HP and defense.

Rating Explanation:

Pinsir is Pokemon with potential. Bug-type moves have a specific niche against raid bosses such as Exeggutor and Alakazam. A Pinsir with a double Bug-type moveset boasts near-optimal performance in these matchups.

Pinsir’s Fighting-type moves are nothing to sneeze at either; it contests Tyranitar, Snorlax, and can even take out Blissey. However, Machamp and Heracross do this job much better.

Defensively, Pinsir has bad stats and a poor typing. Fire, Flying, and Rock-type attackers are common, which prevent Pinsir from being a true contender.
