Offensive Moves Explanation
  • Scyther’s best fast moves are Fury Cutter and Air Slash. Either are ideal in a Bug or Flying-type attacking role.
  • Steel Wing lacks STAB, and its type effectiveness profile has minimal utility. Scizor is a better Steel-type attacker.
  • Fury Cutter should be paired with X-Scissor or Bug Buzz. X-Scissor has much less cooldown and is easier to dodge with.
  • Air Slash should be paired with Aerial Ace. This is one of the higher Flying-type DPS movesets in the game.
  • Night Slash lacks STAB and isn’t particularly useful.
Defensive Moves Explanation
  • Air Slash benefits from STAB and has the best defensive DPS of Scyther’s fast moves.
  • Steel Wing’s defensive DPS is decent and hits Rock-types effectively, who otherwise prey on Scyther’s double weakness.
  • Fury Cutter barely tickles attackers.
  • All of Scyther’s charge moves are halfway decent on defense. X-Scissor and Night Slash are notable for hitting early and often, while Bug Buzz hits hardest and Aerial Ace is in between.

Rating Explanation:

The Pokemon franchise has drilled the expectation that when we evolve our Pokemon, we get a bigger, meaner, strictly better product. That’s true 99% of the time. Scyther, however, is the exception to the rule: while Scizor is generally more useful than Scyther, Scyther has some niches that Scizor can’t replicate.

Scyther is currently one of the few species in the game with access to a full Flying-type moveset. Unlike other such species, Scyther also possesses good stats to back up this distinction. Its typing doubly resists Grass and Fighting, both of which are vulnerable to Flying, making Scyther a great attacker into those types.

As a Bug-type attacker, Scyther is fair, but it is outclassed by Scizor and Pinsir in this respect.
