PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Low Kick hits Normal, Dark, and Ice effectively, which are commonly found in gyms, but Mud Slap does not.

  • If you are lucky enough to have a Stomp Kangaskhan, good for you! It trounces other charge moves due to STAB.

  • Outrage is the best of Kangaskhan's current charge moves, having huge power and wide neutral coverage.

  • Earthquake and Crunch are poor overall, but Earthquake at least matches type with Mud Slap.

  • Kangaskhan's other legacy move, Brick Break, lacks the power to be useful.

PVE Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Mud Slap has substantially higher defensive DPS than Low Kick.

  • Stomp is a clear winner due to its STAB and few resistances; this 2 bar move is annoying to fight.

  • Outrage is a fine choice as well; it's strong and not widely resisted, but it’s easy to dodge.

  • Crunch and Brick Break fire early and often, so they are also worth considering.

  • With 1 bar and a late damage window, Earthquake won’t do squat.

PVE Overview

If you come from or go to the land down under, be sure to pick up a Kangaskhan. This 'mon has a very interesting kit that contains no STAB moves besides one legacy move. She has a solid defensive movepool and typing that is compromised by pretty average stats. Kangaskhan isn’t designed for offense, where middling Atk and lack of STAB make for a poor attacker.

Kangaskhan does have a bit of hope for the future in the form of a mega evolution, though without the advantage of its signature ability, Parental Bond, it likely won't be fantastic.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Mud Slap+Power-Up Punch and Stomp

Mud Slap is not a good move in PVP. It has a fairly good 3 DPT (Damage Per Turn), but a mere 2.66 EPT (Energy Per Turn). Power-Up Punch (40 Power/35 Energy) is an absolute standard for Kangaskhan. It has low power, but it comes out very quickly and has the advantage of boosting attack with each use. Given a bit of shield play, it can make Kangaskhan a huge offensive threat that deals huge damage with each attack given a few uses. Stomp (55 Power/40 Energy) has better base damage per energy, the advantage of STAB boosting it even farther, and it still comes out fairly quickly. However, it's a legacy move, making it less than ideal for most players.

Mud Slap+Power-Up Punch and Crunch

Instead of the legacy Stomp, this set uses the fairly comparable and much more accessible Crunch (70 Power/45 Energy). While not as powerful due to lacking STAB and having a higher energy cost, it has the advantage of hitting the Psychic types that shrug off Power-Up Punch and the Ghost types that don't care about Power-Up Punch or Stomp for Super Effective damage. However, it does leave Kangaskhan more vulnerable to Fighting types.

Mud Slap+Power-Up Punch and Outrage

Outrage (110 Power/60 Energy) is a great move in PVP. It has huge power and a decent energy cost as well as wide coverage. It also works well with the coverage of Mud Slap and Power-Up Punch, as they hit the Steel types that are the main threat to Dragon type attacks.

Mud Slap+Power-Up Punch and Earthquake

Earthquake (120 Power/65 Energy) is another good attack for PVP. It sports good coverage and power, but it also has very high energy cost, which does not pair well with low energy-gain quick-moves.

Low Kick Vs. Mud Slap

Low Kick has a mere 2 DPT (Damage Per Turn) and 2.5 EPT (Energy Per Turn), making it generally less powerful than the also below-average Mud Slap. It does, however, sport a bit more energy gain, which could be useful with Earthquake in particular. However, it's generally not good enough to consider unless you have specific need for a Fighting-type Quick move

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 1 / 5

Poor Kangaskhan really doesn't have much to its advantage. Its quick moves are bad and its typing is not good, plus it's outclassed in any possible niche by many other Pokemon. It can be a bit unpredictable due to its wide movepool, but it just has too many weights holding it back to be considered good.

Ultra League: 1 / 5

Kangaskhan actually does have a bit better performance in the Ultra League due to its in-demand type coverage options, but that increase is only marginal. It's still outclassed in all that it does and has little more than its unpredictable moveset to its advantage.

Master League: 1 / 5

Same story as above. Too bad Kangaskhan's kid can't just jump out of its pouch and help it....
