Offensive Moves Explanation
  • Low Kick is on par with Rock Smash; the former is easier to dodge with and gains energy faster while the latter deals slightly higher DPS.

  • Close Combat is the preferred charge move; it has a massive DPS advantage over its 3 bar competitors for only a marginally higher cooldown.

  • Brick Break outclasses Low Sweep, but unfortunately is a legacy move. The two moves are identical save for the former’s lower cooldown.

  • Stomp and Stone Edge are impractical for Hitmonlee’s role as a Fighting-type attacker.
Defensive Moves Explanation
  • Rock Smash is clearly superior to Low Kick for its higher power and DPS.

  • Stone Edge is the preferred charge move; despite being a 1 bar move, it has a very early damage window plus the ability to hit Psychic-types neutrally and Flying-types super effectively.

  • Stomp is a decent alternative; hits counters for neutral damage while being spread out across 2 bars.

  • Brick Break is superior to Low Sweep for its earlier damage window and higher defensive DPS.

  • Close Combat has an early damage window and high DPS but is more exploitable due to its 1 bar nature.

Rating Explanation:

With the current meta starved for strong Fighting-types, Hitmonlee acts as a novelty side project. It has an Atk stat similar to Machamp, and a similarly high Def to compensate for its lack of HP. However, its moveset isn’t optimized, which is made apparent by its lower efficiency when compared to Ursaring, who isn’t even a Fighting-type. With the huge performance gap between Machamp and Hitmonlee, the prospect of being the “3rd best Fighting-type” loses its value.

Another factor that keeps Hitmonlee from greatness is its sheer rarity. Ridiculously elusive as Tyrogue and even more so in the wild, there’s simply no consistent way to obtain Hitmonlee candy or sample for optimal movesets. In contrast, its direct competitor has its own dedicated raid that can even be soloed by players with proficient Psychic-type lineups, making Machamp infinitely more accessible.
