Overview

When just using Machamp, Houndoom is like a far more difficult version of Tyranitar or Absol. Fire Fang and Fire Blast are especially tough for Machamp to deal with. Luckily, Kyogre is dominant vs. all Houndoom movesets and is the clear top counter. A mix of high-level Kyogre and Machamp have leeway to win in neutral weather. In cloudy or rain weather, Houndoom is a relatively easy duo.

Approach

Team composition

  • Machamp and Kyogre are optimal; using more Kyogre is more reliable

  • Various weather conditions allow for inclusion of other viable counters

Dodging strategy

  • If relying mostly on Machamp, dodge 1-3 Foul Play and 4-6 Fire Blast

  • The more Kyogre used on a team, the less needed dodging becomes

Counters

Note: "Good" movesets are not necessarily viable at the level indicated.

Should be powered up to at least L34 for last Waterfall breakpoint

  • Proficient vs. Fire Blast, where others may have trouble

Cons:

  • Low candy availability due to legendary Pokemon status

Counters viable at level 40
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Last Counter breakpoint is at L36, but advised to max out at L40

Pros:

  • Competitive with Kyogre for top tier DPS vs. Houndoom

  • Easily accessible due to being a current tier 3 raid boss

Cons:

  • Must dodge Fire Blast and sometimes Foul Play as well

Hariyama Hariyama

No Counter breakpoints above L30, so advised to max out at L40

Pros:

  • A low resource counter with an evolve cost of 50 candy

  • Highly accessible; a common species in many locations

Cons:

  • Slower than Machamp, but slightly bulkier vs. Fire Blast

Tyranitar Tyranitar

Last Smack Down breakpoint is at L36.5; should max out at L40

Pros:

  • Bulky and resists everything that Houndoom has to offer

  • Current tier 4 raid boss; also featured on Community Day

Cons:

  • An inconsistent win rate if used by itself, even at level 40

  • Needs exclusive Community Day move to truly stand out
