Overview

Giratina's Altered forme trades a bit of the damage held by its Origin Forme for more sheer bulk in the form of Defense. This makes it a potentially difficult raid that would generally require 3 players to take down... if not for the fact that it's weak to two of the strongest types in the entire game. While it can still be a bit of a tight Duo, it's still very much doable with the top counters on this list, though many of the "good" counters listed also drop below the 25 DPS threshold, and thus generally aren't duo-worthy.

Approach

Team composition

  • Dragon, Dark, and Ghost are all powerful types, and 2/3 of them sport an innate weakness to something that Giratina can throw at it. For this reason, it's probably best to mix-and-match if at all possible.

Dodging strategy

  • An occasional dodge can help, especially if it helps avoid a relobby

Best Raid Boss Counters

Supreme Mega Evolution Counters

Mega Rayquaza Mega Rayquaza
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Giratina has a Dragon typing, so of course Mega Rayquaza tops this list. With unrivaled DPS combined with high average TDO, nothing in this game really can compare with it. It is weak to the majority of Giratina's moves, but it's still got the raw power to steamroll most of the competition with ease.

Good Counters

Mega Gengar Mega Gengar
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Mega Gengar may not be quite up to par with Mega Rayquaza, but it's still the premier Ghost Type Mega Evolution, and arguably the best Pokemon to bring if your raid group is heavily invested in Ghost Type counters. It's a bit frail, but it's still very much worth considering.

Mega Garchomp Mega Garchomp
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Mega Garchomp isn't as good as Mega Rayquaza, but it does tend to have a higher average TDO in part due to its resistance to Ancient Power. Without a doubt, this monster is a great backup option.

Mega Tyranitar Mega Tyranitar
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The top TDO option for this raid, Mega Tyranitar resists Giratina's Ghost Type moves and can tank through just about everything else. The one problem with Shadow Tyranitar is the fact that we don't have many outstanding non-Mega Dark Type counters outside of Shadow Tyranitar.

Mega Gardevoir Mega Gardevoir
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Mega Gardevoir has the outstanding advantage of double-resisting Giratina's Dragon Type moves, but it's also weak to Giratina's Ghost Type moves. Add to this the fact that its Mega boost is for Fairy Types, which are very sub-par, and it becomes clear that Mega Gardevoir is great on paper, but not so much in practice. Still, it can work as a great backup, or if your raid group wants to go all-in on Fairy Types for whatever reason/

Mega Banette Mega Banette
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Basically Mega Gengar, but worse.

Mega Salamence Mega Salamence
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Basically Mega Rayquaza, but worse.

Supreme Counters

Shadow Salamence Shadow Salamence
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Shadow Salamence is the DPS king outside of Mega Evolutions. If you want to beat Giratina into the ground as thoroughly as possible, then this is one of the best options that you can use.

shadow_chandelure Shadow Chandelure
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Arguably the best Ghost, Shadow Chandelure hits hard... but it doesn't appreciate Giratina's Ghost Type moves or Ancient Power. Still Shadow Chandelure remains an outstanding counter that's very much worth a slot.

Shadow Dragonite Shadow Dragonite
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Mega Salamence, but it trades a bit of DPS for a bit of TDO.

ShadowTyranitar Shadow Tyranitar
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Shadow Tyranitar sports outstanding TDO, great DPS, and it doesn't particularly fear anything that Giratina can throw at it.

Shadow Garchomp Shadow Garchomp
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Shadow Garchomp can punch in the same league as monsters like Shadow Salamence and Shadow Dragonite, making it an outstanding counter into Giratina.

PalkiaOrigin Palkia (Origin Forme)
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Palkia's Origin Forme is an outstanding Dragon Type attacker, and Spacial Rend puts it fairly close to the top-tier Dragons listed above.

DialgaOrigin Dialga (Origin Forme)
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Great DPS combined with outstanding TDO that's backed by only taking neutral damage from Dragon Type attacks and resisting Ancinet Power makes Dialga a strong, universal counter that can drop in regardless of Giratina's movest.

Good Counters

ShadowWeavile Shadow Weavile
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Shadow Weavile resists Ghost Type moves, but is also weak to Ancient Power. It frequently won't last a long time, but it has the DPS to be worth considering.

Shadow Latios Shadow Latios
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While fairly easy to overlook, Shadow Latios is actually a really good Dragon Type that can put in good work... but it's also weak to everything that Giratina can throw at it, save Ancient Power.

Shadow Mewtwo Shadow Mewtwo
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Shadow Mewtwo doesn't appreciate Giratina's Ghost Type moves, but it always hits hard and is worth considering. It can also sport Ice Beam over Shadow Ball, but the damage drop is noticeable.

shadow-gengar Shadow Gengar
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Shadow Gengar isn't going to last long, especially against Ghost Type movesets, but it's going to deal a lot of damage while on the field.

ShadowSwine Shadow Mamoswine
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The top Ice Type counter here, Shadow Mamoswine has good DPS, but is overall pretty middling.

Rayquaza Rayquaza
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

One of the members of the old-guard of raiders, Rayquaza still does great work.
