Everything You Need to Know About the Best New Gen 4 Evolutions

Two Part Guide

Introduction

Generation 4 will bring, along with brand new pokémon, 7 baby forms and as many as 22 additional evolutions of Pokémon we already have!

In this article, we’ll take a comprehensive overview of the top 10, sorting which ones you should plan on getting a full team of into 4 relevance tiers. Their stats are calculated with the current conversion formula, and the projected movesets are based on Gen 6 learnsets from the main games; only the most likely moves were included for brevity. Evolution candy costs are based on the current standard patterns.

Many of these evolutions require particular items or conditions to evolve, such as being in a certain environment or learning a move. Implementing those in GO would make sense to slow down Pokédex completion and prevent players from getting full squads as soon as they drop. There are 10 special evolutionary items introduced in Gen 4: Shiny Stone, Dawn Stone, Dusk Stone, Razor Claw, Razor Fang, Protector, Magmarizer, Electirizer, Dubious Disc, and Reaper Cloth. However, we’ll have to wait and see how Niantic decides to handle evolution methods.

You can find the viable and dex filler entries here in part two.

Type: Ground / Rock

Evolved from: Rhydon

Projected Evolution Requirements: 100 Candy + Evolution Item (Protector)

Projected STAB Fast Moves Mud Slap, Smack Down
Projected STAB Charge Moves Earthquake, Drill Run, Rock Blast, Stone Edge, Rock Slide
Predicted Rating 4.5—5 / 5

Explanation

Rhyperior has monstrous stats: +22% tankiness on Tyranitar and +13% on Groudon! To also match them in DPS and outclass them completely, though, it has to rely on getting the right moveset. Drill Run would be the optimal Ground charge move. The standard Earthquake would still render it good, but not better than Groudon or even Garchomp.

As a Rock attacker, it only needs Smack Down, and it would be really disappointing if Niantic decides to keep it Tyranitar-exclusive instead. The viable charge moves to pair it with are many: Rock Blast (the most appropriate one, as it literally blasts rocks from its hands), Stone Edge, Rock Slide, or even its signature move Rock Wrecker.

Type: Ground / Ice

Evolved from: Piloswine

Projected Evolution Requirements: 100 Candy + Learn "Ancient Power"

Projected STAB Fast Moves Mud Slap, Powder Snow, Mud Shot, Ice Shard
Projected STAB Charge Moves Bulldoze, Avalanche, Earthquake, Blizzard, Ice Beam
Predicted Rating 4.5 / 5

Explanation

This chubby mammoth will be our first top-tier Ice attacker, with stats similar to Gyarados, and it shouldn’t require an evolutionary item as in the main games it only needs to learn Ancient Power to evolve. So that’s likely be included in its movepool, along with the obligatory STAB options. Having Avalanche, like Piloswine, would make a difference compared to Blizzard or Ice Beam, boosting its already Jynx-level DPS by an additional 10%.

As a bonus, Mamoswine will also be one of the best Ground attackers, with DPS not far from Groudon, as long as it gets a double Ground moveset.

Type: Grass

Evolved from: Tangela

Projected Evolution Requirements: 50 Candy + Learn "Ancient Power"

Projected STAB Fast Moves Vine Whip, Bullet Seed
Projected STAB Charge Moves Power Whip, Solar Beam, Grass Knot, Seed Bomb, Energy Ball
Predicted Rating 4.5 / 5

Explanation

Big Tangela has a really high chance of getting the best Grass-type moves in the game, as those are fitting to its design and already learned by its pre-evolution. It would have DPS close to that of Frenzy Plant Venusaur, but a whopping 38% more durability. I guess you can say it's ready to kick some Grass.

Type: Electric

Evolved from: Electabuzz

Projected Evolution Requirements: 50 Candy + Evolution Item (Electrizer)

Projected STAB Fast Moves Thunder Shock, Charge Beam, Volt Switch
Projected STAB Charge Moves Wild Charge, Thunder Punch, Thunderbolt, Discharge, Thunder
Predicted Rating 4—4.5 / 5

Explanation

With an Attack stat above Raikou’s, the yellow yeti has the potential to become the top DPS Electric attacker! However, that would only be achieved if Niantic decides to give it Wild Charge. With Thunderbolt or Thunder Punch, which is what Electabuzz can currently learn, Electivire would merely end up as an enhanced Jolteon.

Type: Grass / Poison

Evolved from: Roselia

Projected Evolution Requirements: 50 Candy + Evolution Item (Shiny Stone)

Projected STAB Fast Moves Razor Leaf, Poison Jab
Projected STAB Charge Moves Solar Beam, Sludge Bomb, Grass Knot, Petal Blizzard, Seed Bomb
Predicted Rating 4—4.5 / 5

Explanation

With the highest Attack stat of any non-legendary Grass type across all generations, Roserade will be a great glass cannon as long as it doesn’t keep Roselia’s Petal Blizzard as a charge move. With the obvious alternative, Solar Beam, it would only be as fast as the bulkier Venusaur and Tangrowth, while with Grass Knot it could actually outpace them.

At the very least, it’s almost guaranteed to become the best Poison attacker in the game. That utility is dubious now, but who knows what the future will hold?

Type: Electric / Steel

Evolved from: Magneton

Projected Evolution Requirements: 100 Candy + Location (Magnetic Field)

Projected STAB Fast Moves Spark, Volt Switch, Thunder Shock, Charge Beam, Hidden Power
Projected STAB Charge Moves Wild Charge, Zap Cannon, Magnet Bomb, Thunderbolt, Discharge, Thunder, Flash Cannon, Iron Head, Gyro Ball
Predicted Rating 4—4.5 / 5

Explanation

As with any Electric-type, Wild Charge is the deal breaker. It would give Magnezone DPS on par with Thunder Shock Zapdos, which coupled with its 12 resistances (the most of any Pokemon ever!), would make it an optimal Electric attacker in many situations. On the other hand, it risks inheriting more natural, weaker moves from Magneton instead.

As a Steel attacker it’s only held back by not learning any possible fast moves of that type. It can outperform Metagross even with Hidden Power Steel.

Type: Dark / Flying

Evolved from: Murkrow

Projected Evolution Requirements: 50 Candy + Evolution Item (Dusk Stone)

Projected STAB Fast Moves Feint Attack, Wing Attack, Sucker Punch, Snarl, Peck
Projected STAB Charge Moves Foul Play, Dark Pulse, Sky Attack, Night Slash, Aerial Ace, Brave Bird, Night Shade
Predicted Rating 4—4.5 / 5

Explanation

Honchkrow is a glass cannon with bulk comparable to Alakazam and access to the best possible moves of both its types. With Foul Play or Dark Pulse (both already learned by its pre-evolution) it would have about 10% more DPS than Tyranitar. With Sky Attack it would become the fastest counter to Fighting-types, even beating Mewtwo. Catching every Murkrow sure is a nightmare, but it might be worth it!

Type: Fairy / Flying

Evolved from: Togetic

Projected Evolution Requirements: 50 Candy + Evolution Item (Shiny Stone)

Projected STAB Fast Moves Fairy Wind, Air Slash, Peck, Hidden Power
Projected STAB Charge Moves Dazzling Gleam, Sky Attack, Aerial Ace
Predicted Rating 4 / 5

Explanation

Togepi’s final evolution has amazing stats and typing, with double resistances to Fighting, Dragon, Ground, and Bug, and it’ll give Niantic the perfect opportunity to finally introduce a Fairy fast move in Fairy Wind. Very few Pokémon can learn it and Gardevoir isn’t among them, so as it stands Togekiss would automatically become the best option. If given Sky Attack, it will also be quite good as a Flying attacker.

Type: Dark / Ice

Evolved from: Sneasel

Projected Evolution Requirements: 50 Candy + Evolution Item (Razor Claw) + Evolve at Night

Projected STAB Fast Moves Feint Attack, Ice Shard, Snarl, Bite
Projected STAB Charge Moves Foul Play, Avalanche, Ice Punch, Dark Pulse, Night Slash, Blizzard, Ice Beam
Predicted Rating 4 / 5

Explanation

All Weavile needs to succeed is to preserve its pre-evolution's current moves. With them, it would be a great glass cannon as both a Dark and an Ice attacker, boasting around 6% more DPS than Tyranitar and Jynx, respectively.

Max CP Base Attack Base Defense Base HP
2866 238 212 130

Type: Ice

Evolved from: Eevee

Projected Evolution Requirements: 25 Candy + Location (Ice Rock)

Projected STAB Fast Moves Ice Shard, Frost Breath
Projected STAB Charge Moves Avalanche, Blizzard, Ice Beam, Icy Wind
Predicted Rating 4 / 5

Explanation

Eevee’s Ice evolution is pretty much equivalent to Weavile, with slightly less Attack and slightly more tankiness. It has the advantage of a guaranteed full STAB moveset, and consequently a really good chance of getting Avalanche.

To obtain Glaceon in the main games you need to level up an Eevee in a snowy environment with an Ice Rock, which means that Niantic might exploit the weather system to mimic that, similarly to how the buddy system was used in place of happiness for Espeon and Umbreon.
