Countering Giratina Altered Forme and Its Place in the Meta

Countering Giratina Altered Forme and Its Place in the Meta

Introduction

On October 23rd, Giratina left the distortion world and took over the raid scene in Pokemon GO. Of course, the Renegade Pokemon didn’t come without some tricky surprises. For the first few hours after release, Giratina’s Altered Forme had its Origin Forme’s stats without the 9% stat tax some Legendaries have. This not only made for a harder fight, but it also caused a lot of confusion for trainers in terms of catch CP. Now that it has had its stats figured out, trainers are not only questioning what its best counters are, but just how powerful it exactly is.

Catch CP: 1848-1931

Boosted Catch CP: 2310-2414

Best Moveset: Shadow Claw + Dragon Claw

  • Shadow Claw is Giratina’s best Fast Move for neutral damage.

  • Dragon Breath is only useful when fighting against Dragon, Normal, or Dark-type Pokemon.

  • Dragon Claw is essentially Giratina’s only Charge Move.

  • Ancient Power and Shadow Sneak are so weak they’re unusable. Dragon Claw will be better even if they hit for effectiveness or if Dragon-type is resisted.

Giratina Counters

The counters to Giratina are pretty straightforward. With a 187 base attack stat, Dragon Claw and Ancient Power barely threaten Rayquaza, Salamence, and Dragonite. Using full teams of these 3 with double Dragon-type movesets should serve you well in any encounter, being the greatest counters in any weather. Should you lack the “Big 3” Dragon-types, Gengar, Latios, and Mewtwo all handle Giratina decently well. If you prefer to be on the more tanky side and save revives, Tyranitar has nothing to fear from Giratina, having no weakness to any of its attacks.

In the event you don’t have enough of the above Pokemon to flesh out a team of 6:

  • Meteor Mash Metagross
  • Dragon Tail Groudon
  • Alolan Exeggutor
  • Houndoom
  • Flygon
  • Granbull
  • Gardevoir
  • Shadow Ball Lucario
  • Outrage Gyarados

All stand out as some of the better C-Rank counters to Giratina. Banette and Shadow Ball Alakazam are also decent options but may faint too quickly to be useful at lower levels. If you are truly desperate, you could consider using your own Giratina for battle (but spending stardust on it isn’t advised).

Breakpoints

It’s not mandatory to hit these breakpoints, but they are the levels where your attacker will have a noticeable improvement in their performance. If you are unfamiliar with what a breakpoint is, we suggest checking out our guide on breakpoints. If you’re curious about the breakpoints of other Pokemon or fast moves, you can find them using our breakpoint tool.

Weather boosts will also affect the breakpoints of Pokemon. We have noted the relevant breakpoints for weather boosted Pokemon down below. Friendship will also influence breakpoints. Our articles will assume ultra friend status.

Bulkpoints aren’t covered in this raid guide because they don’t really apply to this raid. With Giratina’s 187 base attack stat coupled with its relatively low base power fast and charge moves, even Gengar avoids getting one shot at level 30+.

Giratina (Altered Forme) and Its Use in the Meta

Being a Legendary Pokemon with an attack stat less than 200 is a one-way ticket to being deemed “useless” in Pokemon GO. Lugia overcomes this fate with its powerful charge moves, but Giratina, unfortunately, has one of the worst movepools in the game. In fact, Giratina’s movepool is so bad that even its unreleased Origin Forme is set to fail despite having a serviceable attack stat. Things may change in the future if either forme gains Shadow Ball or their signature move “Shadow Force” but until then Giratina is just a Dex Entry.

Conclusion

Giratina Altered Forme marks the beginning of the Gen 4 raid bosses in Pokemon GO. While its low attack stat and poor movepool make it a little uninspiring, it’s kind of refreshing that Pokemon GO isn’t kicking off the new generation with its most powerful Pokemon. Looking ahead we can expect to see Palkia and Dialga in the months of November (11/20) and December, both of which are powerful Dragons. Which one we’ll get next is still a mystery. What’s as mysterious is what Niantic has planned for Giratina’s Origin Forme. Hopefully, we’ll see a movepool upgrade before its release!
