Hardest battle party to assemble

My goal is to assemble a 6 pokemon lineup as strong as possible of each type. Of the 18 existing types there are 5 who are not relevant due to missing movesets (fairy), a small pool of strong pokemon (bug, poison, steel) or due to being not effectice vs. anything (normal). That leaves 13 types where a diversified lineup of 6 strong and relevant mons is possible. Which is the hardest team to assemble for you?

For me it's a psychic lineup. Alalazam and Espeon have good moves but are glassy, so I hesitate investing heavily into them. The other options have psychic as move (Exeggutor) or are better used in other lineups (DG Guardevoir, SB Mewto, SA Lugia, DC Latios, SoB Eggy).

Ground is pretty hard- basically it's groudon or shit (it's tragic that groudon at level 22.5 already out DPS's a Level 40 maxed rhydon). So either you burn RC into 6 maxed groudon or deal with the poster child of the poverty gap that is Rhydon.

Water is pretty hard as well analogously, but gyarados is at least still vaguely competitive compared to rhydon...

Moreover, Ground only has Earthquake and that’s bad already. No relevant pokemon learns drill run

Ground - basically would be 6 max Groudons, if not 6 weather-boosted Groudons, all with double moves

Ice - All ice mons are almost the same. Standouts are Jynx, with highest DPS but glass, Articuno, for best overall, and double-ice Mew, which is tanky but also a rarity.

Bug - Scizor and Pinsir are kind of neck-and-neck, and Scizor is pretty rare

Steel - Metagross is the only one with decent DPS and is extremely rare. Aggron is decent as a runner-up but only decent.

Ghost - Hesitant to power up Gengar because they are so glassy and because I have none with Shadow Claw.

Flying - Torn between Rayquaza with a lower DPS set and bad moves and Lugia without a quick move of Flying type.

So you want a team of 6 unique attackers of that type? If so, I heavily disagree with your evaluation that 13 types can put together a lineup of 6 unique strong and relevant mons.
Dragon, last spot would go to Flygon
Fighting, last 2 spots would go to Hitmonlee and Primeape if you don't have Heracross
Flying, last spot goes to Xatu
Ghost
Ground, last spot goes to Camerupt or Sandslash
Rock, last spot goes to Lunatone/Solrock or Sudowoodo

Ghost is the hardest, it literally only has Mewtwo, Gengar and Banette worth mentioning.

Disregard this if unique teams were not your intention, most of your post reads like that to me though. Looking through these made me really sad about the lack of diversity in this game.

In case duplicates are allowed, I'd say flying is hardest, simply because there are so few good flying mons. It's basically Ray, Lugia and Dnite and maybe Ho-Oh.

Scyther to an extent
Edit: scratch that, swellow and fearow has higher damage than scyther. It only got resistances going

No, it's Rayquaza, and a huge gap after that. While DT/O is stronger, people lose sight of the fact that double flying Rayquaza still has an excellent CDPS, particularly to stuff that's weak to flying.

Case in point, all values for level 30 pokemon with 15 attack, against a neutral foe with defense 250.

Rayquaza DT/O: 21.3 CDPS
Rayquaza AS/AA: 18.6 CDPS
Dragonite DT/O: 19.6 CDPS
Dragonite DT/H: 16.1 CDPS

So double flying Rayquaza is almost as good as DT/O Dragonite, and is a lot better than Hurricane Dragonite. For comparision, Aggron comes up around 14, Lugia around 15, with their best movesets. Sure, they are defensive monsters, but Rayquaza is THE offensive monster.

Where did you get these numbers from?

Using the numbers I pulled straight from gamepress that I compiled into a spreadsheet (and using DT/OR rayquaza as a baseline): DT/OR Rayquaza being 100%, DT/OR Dragonite being 92.114% and AS/AA Rayquaza being 82.934% of the max damage. (your numbers show flying ray being more towards 87%, but your dragonite number seems correct).

A flying ray is terrible on offense as a generalist purpose but against the specialist matchup it is really good.

Yes, there's a huge gap in DPS after Ray, but Hu Dnite and SA Lugia are still strong pokemon that you could plausibly include in a team and not feel like you're putting in garbage. After the legendaries and pseudos, the quality of flying types drops like a rock.

Maybe I was not clear enough. I just wanted to say that there should be multiple competitive pokemon available from a type. Ghost is hard too I aggree.

Bug is somewhat doable with Pinsir, Scizor and Heracross but that's a lot of work and a regional. Definitely an interesting challenge you got there either way.

I still think Alakazam, Espeon, & Gengar are worh it. They really help against the clock in solo raids. Just need one Lugia in the 6 hole for raids where psychic is optimal. I've no trouble taking down any fighting mon with 3 Alakazams, 2 espeon, and 1 Lugia. Machamp is now doable for me with 47 seconds left, and about 12 seconds for hitmonlee and hitmonchan (They may be gone now).

Gengar can help with bonus balls in some 5* raids (mewtwo in particular) and its what made soloing Alakazam possible initially. (Well that and a shadow ball mewtwo and ttars to provide bulk at the end).

I'm biased towards high DPS

I tend to disagree with your goal. Why would you have a full squad of every (relevant) type? Instead, I would build a squad to combat every type. Almost every type has more then one weakness. For example: a very hard team to build is flying. Your only options are legendaries and dragonite, but why? It is strong against fighting, but you can also use alakazam, espeon, mewtwo and gardevoir for that. It is strong against bug and grass, but you can also use moltres, flareon and charizard for that. So I would focus on combatting every type, and then move to the dual types. This is much more interesting, much more educational, and is very usefull once pokemon like dialga come to raids.

Interesting too, but now the question becomes on which types to focus on to cover all possible types and which attacking type you can completely ignore. Would be fun for sure to make the research which minimal number of types would be able to cover everything! Tough task...I went this route because I always liked the idea in the old games to assemble a team of 6 fire types.
