Following the announcement of Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! for the Nintendo Switch, Alolan Exeggutor was released into Pokemon GO. While there haven’t been any reports of players being able to evolve Exeggcute into Alolan Exeggutor (yet), there is little need as this giant palm tree is currently found in the wild -and in abundance! While Alolan Exeggutor has well defined vertical advantages over its Kantonian form, its combat advantages cannot be inferred by mere stature alone!
Before we dissect “How” Alolan Exeggutor performs, you may want to know “Why” Alolan Exeggutor is.
Why so Tall?
According to Professor Oak in Episode 2 of Pokemon Sun and Moon, The Guardian’s Challenge!, Alolan Exeggutor grow so tall because of Alola’s climate, which is described as being “sunny all year long.” Professor Oak continues that an Alolan Exeggutor is actually the truest form of Exeggutor, looking “exactly the way it’s supposed to” due to living in an “ideal environment.”
If you’re a Pokemon “Machamp” then you are already aware that Alolan Exeggutor is a Grass/Dragon-type Pokemon opposed to a Grass/Psychic one. While it seems completely random, the justification may lie in what kind of tree Alolan Exeggutor is. Compared to the Kantonian Exeggutor, the Alolan Exeggutor more closely resembles a palm tree, some of which are of the Dracaena genus of trees. While being based off a “Dragon Tree” may sound like a stretch, have you seen Alolan Exeggutor?
Like Girafarig, Alolan Exeggutor has a sentient tail that thinks independently of its host body. For both Pokemon, this tail serves the purpose of protecting the rear. Eyes on the back of your head? How about a full face! Unlike Giraffarig’s tail, Alolan Exeggutor’s is much more handsome. Could this tail be the source of Exeggutor’s Dragon-type power??!

Having a 3 lower Base Attack stat, and subsequently 35 lower Max CP, trainers may be inclined to write off Alolan Exeggutor as a weaker iteration of its Kantonian counterpart. However, much to public Outrage, Alolan Exeggutor has a Dragon sub-typing, trading its Psychic and Fighting-type resistances for a doubled defense on Electric, Grass, and Water. While Grass doesn’t self-counter Grass well and we are long past the days of needing Grass-types to counter Electric, a doubled up resistance to Water is crucial. For example, a level 40 Kantonian Exeggutor wouldn’t be able to withstand a typical Hydro Pump cycle from Kyogre in the rain, while an Alolan Exeggutor can at level 27!
Gaining a Dragon sub-typing does come with some downsides. On offense, Alolan Exeggutor is more or less restricted to Grass-type damage while Kantonian Exeggutor can function as a bulky, budget Psychic-type Pokemon. On defense, while Exeggutor is happy to get rid of its Fire-type weakness, it loses its resistance and super effective damage to Machamp -the main reason Exeggutor is a candidate for defense in the first place. Despite these apparent disadvantages on defense, it is certain you’ll see many Alolan Exeggutor’s towering over your local gyms. Anyone serious about defense wouldn’t be considering either Exeggutor in the first place (unless they’re serious about having a good time, amirite?).
Given Alolan Exeggutor’s popularity on the gym scene, you may want to be aware of its weaknesses. While the Dragon-type synergizes well with Grass, remedying its Fire-type weakness while bolstering its resistances to Electric, Grass, and Water, it leaves Alolan Exeggutor doubly weak to Ice. If bringing out your Walrein to counter a Grass-type is too much of a gamble for you, Alolan Exeggutor’s Dragon-typing also makes it vulnerable to Dragon-type attacks. Dragonite, Rayquaza, and Latios have made quick work of the Kantonian Exeggutor in the past, and the Dragon vulnerability will make the fight even faster; so fast that it may not even get off a single Dragon Pulse!
If the dual threat of Dragon Pulse and Seed Bomb weighs heavily on your mind, Scizor resists both and hits super effectively with X-Scissor. If auto-select stuck you with your low level, bad IV Hurricane Dragonite, threat not because Alolan Exeggutor is still weak to Flying; though you may beat it before charging up your attack. Even if Alolan Exeggutor isn’t weak to their attacks, there isn’t anything really impeding Machamp, Mewtwo, or Blast Burn Charizard from running through it either.
While it is tempting to prey on Alolan Exeggutor’s Fairy-type weakness, without a Fairy-type Fast Move, your fights may go longer than expected. Perhaps if we had a Fairy-type Pokemon with STAB Ice-type attacks..

After Exeggutor’s near 2 year reign as the Grass-type King, in March of 2018 Frenzy Plant Venusaur stole the crown.Vensuar’s coup could be short lived as Exeggutor has returned, taller and more resilient than before! In a vacuum, Alolan Exeggutor has higher neutral damage per second (DPS). When pitted against a Water-type opponent, Venusaur has higher Grass-type DPS; however, Alolan Exeggutor’s TDO advantage puts it ahead in DPS*TDO. Frenzy Plant gives Venusaur more energy efficiency and higher damage per energy (DPE), while Alolan Exeggutor’s greater resistances allows it to more reliably launch multiple Solar Beams.
Overall, the DPS and DPE advantages of Frenzy Plant keep Venusaur on the throne, but the choice really comes down to player preference. Access may be more of a deciding factor some since Alolan Exeggutor currently saturates spawns while Frenzy Plant Venusaur can no longer be obtained, being a Community Day exclusive. That said, we also don’t know how Alolan Exeggutor will be obtained after this event is over.

As shown in our previous article on Alolan’s, Alolan Exeggutor does not compare to all of the powerful Dragon-types in the meta. Only having access to Dragon Pulse as a Charge Move doesn’t help things either. Alolan Exeggutor’s Grass-typing may give it an advantage over Water-type Pokemon, but this merit is based on its role as a Grass-type Pokemon rather than a Dragon. Hope may lie in its unreleased signature move Dragon Hammer. However, unless Dragon Hammer is more powerful than Doom Desire, Alolan Exeggutor can only hope to reach Dragonite’s level of DPS.
While it is curious why Pokemon GO chose to launch an Alolan Pokemon to celebrate the announcement of a Kanto based game, the “true form” of Exeggutor is here to stay! While it doesn’t add much to the defense meta (aside from an even taller gym), Alolan Exeggutor is a powerful addition to the Grass-type family. With its high base attack and double resistance to Water, it stands to rival Venusaur as the best Grass-type in the game. However, like Exeggutor, this isn’t even Venusaur’s final form.
